About The Position

Boeing Commercial Airplanes is seeking an Associate Flight Controls Mechanical Hydraulics Design & Analysis Engineer to join the 787 Flight Controls Mechanical Hydraulics Engineering team in North Charleston, South Carolina. The role supports one of several sub-teams: Primary Flight Control Systems, High Lift Systems, Flight Control Electronics, Hydraulic Systems, Landing Gear Actuation and Steering Systems, or Brake Control Systems. The engineer will design, analyze, test, certify, and support flight control and mechanical hydraulic systems and components for the 787 family of aircraft, and support their production and fleet operations. Components may include mechanical and hydraulic actuators, electro-mechanical and hydraulic valves, sensors, gearboxes, torque tubes, and electronic control units. The role involves requirements development, systems and component design, analysis, validation, certification, production support, fleet support, and coordination with internal teams, suppliers, airline customers, and regulatory agencies. The position requires applying engineering analysis, including hand calculations to check computational analysis, multi-variable analysis, and test procedures to validate analysis tools. The engineer will also develop system/component interface requirements, communicate progress to broad audiences, and plan and execute engineering work to project goals, schedules, and cost constraints. Relevant technical areas may include system controls, mechanical and electrical systems, systems modeling, electro-mechanical actuation, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics, aircraft certification, and correlation of models with data. Potential tools include Cameo, Matlab/Simulink, Matlab, C++, Python, Easy5, Adams, and Simscape.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, focused on Mechanical, Civil, Aerospace, Aeronautical, or Material Sciences.
  • At least 2 years of related work experience.
  • At least 2 years of professional experience in an engineering field.
  • At least 1 year of experience with mechanical systems.
  • Successful candidates must satisfy Boeing's Conflict of Interest assessment process.
  • Must meet U.S. export control compliance requirements as a U.S. Person, as defined by 22 C.F.R. §120.62.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience mentoring and developing others.
  • Technical knowledge in one or more of the following areas: system controls, mechanical systems, electrical systems, systems modeling, electro-mechanical actuation, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics, aircraft certification, or model correlation from data to analysis tools.
  • Experience with Cameo, Matlab/Simulink, scripting in Matlab, C++, or Python, and/or physical modeling tools such as Easy5, Adams, or Simscape.

Responsibilities

  • Resolve airplane-level requirements into system-level requirements and system-level requirements into component requirements, using time- and cost-efficient validation methods.
  • Participate in system, component, and detail design, with thorough documentation and within schedule and cost constraints, to produce accurate, readily manufacturable system and component specifications and drawings.
  • Participate in system- and component-level validation analysis and testing, including test planning, test rigs, test monitoring, analysis and test reports, supplier test report review and approval, failure analysis, and failure mitigation.
  • Participate in certification efforts, including creating certification artifacts such as system safety analyses, failure modes and effects analyses, and fault tree analyses; demonstrate traceability to regulatory requirements; and resolve regulatory conflicts.
  • Support production by resolving build problems at Boeing and supplier manufacturing facilities, improving build accuracy, build rate, and production-line safety, and addressing rejections, functional test failures, and flight squawks.
  • Support global fleet operations by consulting on airline and regulator queries, participating in or leading Service Related Problem resolution, and analyzing reported flight incidents for recommendations to the Safety Review Board and Continued Operational Safety Program determinations.
  • Coordinate across functions and organizations, including manufacturing, avionics, crew operations, airplane safety, aerodynamics, supply chain management, BCA systems software, suppliers, airline customers, and regulatory agencies.
  • Gather, define, and document system-level requirements for flight control and mechanical hydraulic systems.
  • Resolve requirement conflicts and perform and document analysis and design of mechanical systems to validate or assess system designs and models.
  • Develop solutions and disposition issues to support customer satisfaction.
  • Develop system and subsystem architecture alternatives, compare them through trade studies, and converge on preferred configurations, including defining and executing system simulations and development test programs.
  • Establish hand calculations to check computational analyses, perform multi-variable engineering analysis, develop test procedures to validate analysis tools, and develop system/component interface requirements.
  • Communicate progress to a broad audience, develop project goals and objectives and schedules, and execute engineering work on time.

Benefits

  • Eligible employees may enroll in health insurance, flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance programs, and programs providing paid and unpaid time away from work.
  • Competitive base pay and variable compensation opportunities.
  • Relocation based on candidate eligibility.
