About The Position

Blue Origin Operations is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to apply technical expertise, leadership, and a commitment to quality to the development of rocket hardware and safe human spaceflight. The role supports the Blue Engines, Lunar, and New Glenn business units by designing production, development, test, integration, and advanced-manufacturing tooling and equipment. The engineer will address projects of varying sizes and technical challenges, collaborate across design, manufacturing, and integration teams, and manage custom-tooling projects through vendor selection, fabrication, inspection, installation, proof testing, and commissioning. The role also includes maintaining schedules and budgets and supporting cradle-to-grave outcomes for safety, cost, quality, cycle time, delivery, reliability, service life, and maintenance or refurbishment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a mechanical engineering role at Level 3 Manufacturing Engineer, or at least 10 years of experience designing, building, and commissioning tooling, fixtures, custom machines, or design-support equipment for manufacturing, assembly, and test.
  • Experience with finite element methods and complex structural analysis, as well as hand calculations and creating free-body diagrams.
  • Proven experience using CAD-based design software for modeling and drafting.
  • Strong expertise in design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA), including taking products from development design to rate production.
  • Understanding of common manufacturing materials, GD&T, and tolerance/stack-up analysis.
  • Understanding of common manufacturing processes and equipment, including CNC machining, manual mills and lathes, welding, sheet-metal bending, lifting and rigging, assembly, and inspection.
  • U.S. citizenship or nationality, U.S. permanent residency, or lawful admission to the U.S. as a refugee or grant of asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with industry standards such as ASME BTH-1, the Aluminum Design Manual, and AISC.
  • Experience with custom machine design, including motors, actuators, linear rails or actuators, pneumatics, hydraulics, and bearings.
  • Experience with Creo and Windchill CAD/PDM systems.
  • Experience with NX and Teamcenter CAD/PDM systems.
  • Experience with analysis packages such as ANSYS Workbench, FEMAP Pre/Post processing, NASTRAN Solver, or NX Advanced Simulation.

Responsibilities

  • Design production, development, test, integration, and advanced-manufacturing tooling and equipment for the Blue Engines, Lunar, and New Glenn business units.
  • Integrate mechanical design and analysis concepts across multiple projects of varying scope in a fast-paced environment.
  • Interpret and apply design and drafting standards, including ASME Y14.5, when creating drawings.
  • Address design challenges involving assembly fixtures, material handlers, rotisseries, test fixtures, structural weldments, environmental chambers, and custom machines.
  • Collaborate with component designers, manufacturing engineers, and integration engineering to optimize safety, cost, quality, cycle time, delivery, reliability, life, and maintenance or refurbishment.
  • Manage custom-tooling projects, including vendor selection, fabrication, inspection, equipment installation, proof testing, and commissioning.
  • Set, implement, and maintain project schedules and budgets to ensure completion.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Basic and supplemental life insurance.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Short- and long-term disability.
  • 401(k) with company match of up to 5%.
