About The Position

The Fleet Mechanic is responsible for the repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting of a wide range of fleet vehicles and heavy equipment used in waste collection, transportation, and landfill operations. This includes but is not limited to trash trucks, compactors, bulldozers, loaders, and other specialized equipment. The mechanic will ensure all equipment is maintained in optimal working condition to support efficient daily operations.

Requirements

  • Experience with waste management equipment such as garbage trucks, recycling vehicles, and compactors.
  • Familiarity with OSHA and DOT safety regulations related to the maintenance and operation of fleet vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Proficiency in the maintenance and repair of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and other mechanical components.
  • 1-3 years of experience as a fleet or heavy equipment mechanic, preferably in the waste management, construction, or transportation industry.
  • Familiarity with computerized diagnostic tools and software for identifying equipment malfunctions.
  • Ensure precision in repairs and maintenance to prevent future malfunctions and improve equipment longevity.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex mechanical issues independently.

Nice To Haves

  • ASE certifications in heavy truck repair or other relevant certifications (preferred but not required).
  • A CDL license may be a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular inspections and preventative maintenance on fleet vehicles, including trucks, compactors, loaders, and other related machinery.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues. Perform repairs in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Dismantle and rebuild engines, transmissions, and other critical mechanical components. Replace worn or damaged parts, including brakes, bearings, and steering systems.
  • Ensure all repairs and maintenance work are performed following company safety standards and local regulations. Report unsafe conditions and accidents immediately.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance tasks, and inspections. Utilize work order systems to track parts and labor.
  • Be available for emergency repairs during breakdowns, including road calls, to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Maintain tools and equipment used for repairs in good working order. Manage and maintain inventory for commonly used parts.
  • Work closely with operations personnel to identify equipment issues and ensure proper scheduling of maintenance tasks.
