About The Position

At the Austin Fleet Mobility Department, we’re proud to play a vital role in keeping our city moving forward. Managing more than 7,500 vehicles across 25 departments—including Fire, Police, EMS, Austin Energy, and Austin Water—we support the essential services that make Austin thrive, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and efficiency. The Fleet Equipment Technician II will perform maintenance and complex repairs on various systems on a diverse fleet with different types of vehicles and equipment to include after-hours call-outs for breakdowns and repairs. The technician will maintain and repair motorized equipment, gasoline and diesel engines and maintain a variety of equipment to ensure full operating capacity during routine and emergency conditions. This has been designated as an Essential Employee position. In the event of a City-designated emergency, Essential Employees provide services that impact the public health, safety, utility services, and welfare of members of the Austin community and other employees and ensure the continuity of essential operations. In such an emergency, Essential Employees may be called back in, may be required to modify their schedule, may be assigned to a City-designated work site, or may be retained on site to assist with operations and recovery.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent plus two (2) years of experience in a related field.
  • Experience may substitute for education up to a maximum of four (4) years.
  • Completion of an accredited automotive, diesel or related certification program may substitute for required experience up to a maximum of six (6) months.
  • An Associate’ degree from an accredited college or university in a related field may substitute for experience, up to a maximum of two (2) years.
  • Requires a Class "C" Driver's license.
  • Must obtain an appropriate Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 120 days of employment.
  • Must also be licensed within six (6) months of employment as a Texas State Vehicle Inspector in accordance with Texas Department of Public Safety procedures and regulations.
  • Must be certified within six (6) months of employment with respect to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards in air conditioning service, repairs, and Freon recovery including, Freon recovery equipment operations.
  • Knowledge of methods, systems and components, and materials used in repair and servicing of vehicles and other equipment including, motorized heavy equipment and trailers.
  • Knowledge of various types of vehicle diagnostic testing and analysis equipment and tools used in vehicle repair and maintenance.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals.
  • Ability to understand and follow work-related instructions and directions.
  • Ability to follow safety practices and procedures needed to operate equipment safely.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public.
  • Must provide his or her own hand tools including, wrenches, sockets, ratchets, toolbox, etc. as a condition of employment.
  • Must meet the minimum hand tool requirements within six (6) months of employment.
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date.
  • External New Hires Hires must meet the City of Austin's Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite.
  • Applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

Responsibilities

  • Performs basic tune-ups on gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Works on various mechanical, electrical, hydraulic/pneumatic, suspension, and cooling systems and components including, removal and reinstallation (R& R).
  • Performs repairs and maintenance on heavy equipment such as crawler loaders, backhoes, and bulldozers.
  • Conducts preventive maintenance on vehicles.
  • Performs basic wheel alignments on vehicles.
  • Operates and uses an acetylene torch in the repair of equipment.
  • Records maintenance and service information and data on designated forms.
  • Perform maintenance and complex repairs on various systems on a diverse fleet with different types of vehicles and equipment to include after-hours call-outs for breakdowns and repairs.
  • Maintain and repair motorized equipment, gasoline and diesel engines and maintain a variety of equipment to ensure full operating capacity during routine and emergency conditions.
