About The Position

At the Austin Fleet Mobility Department, we’re proud to play a vital role in keeping our city moving forward. Managing more than 7,500 vehicles across 25 departments—including Fire, Police, EMS, Austin Energy, and Austin Water—we support the essential services that make Austin thrive, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and efficiency. The Fleet Equipment Technician I will perform maintenance and complex repairs on various systems on a diverse fleet with different types of vehicles and equipment to include after-hours call-outs for breakdowns and repairs. The technician will maintain and repair motorized equipment, gasoline and diesel engines and maintain a variety of equipment to ensure full operating capacity during routine and emergency conditions.

Requirements

  • Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of vehicle mechanical work.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to use tools effectively in repair of equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand vehicle service manuals and lubrication charts.
  • Ability to follow proper safety practices and procedures necessary to operate various types of equipment.
  • Ability to interact with tact and courtesy and maintain a professional demeanor.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public.
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent plus six (6) months of experience in a related field.
  • Required a Class "C" Driver's License.
  • Must obtain an appropriate Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 120 days of employment with the City.
  • External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite.
  • Applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of an accredited automotive, diesel or related certification program or an Associate’ degree from an accredited college or university in a related field may substitute for required experience up to a maximum of six (6) months.
  • Experience may substitute for education up to a maximum of four (4) years.

Responsibilities

  • Refuels and performs preventive maintenance on a variety of types of vehicles and other equipment.
  • Changes all type of tires and perform repairs to small tires.
  • Lubricates vehicles and changes oil and filters.
  • Initiates minor repairs and changes belts, hoses, windshield wipers, etc.
  • Records maintenance and service information and data on designated forms.
  • Transports vehicles of all types including heavy vehicles.
  • Perform maintenance and complex repairs on various systems on a diverse fleet with different types of vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform after-hours call-outs for breakdowns and repairs.
  • Maintain and repair motorized equipment, gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Maintain a variety of equipment to ensure full operating capacity during routine and emergency conditions.
