About The Position

TARTA is hiring experienced drivers to serve as frontline connections to the community by operating buses on designated fixed routes. Operators provide safe, timely transportation and exceptional customer service while helping connect people to jobs, education, and essential services. The role offers a 40-hour workweek, overtime opportunities, union-backed seniority benefits, advancement opportunities, and comprehensive benefits. Schedules may initially be provided by 4 PM for the following day, with availability required between 4:20 AM and 12:00 AM according to operational needs. Assignments may include split shifts. Greater seniority provides opportunities to bid on more consistent schedules. All ATU Fixed Line Operators will participate in TARTA’s one-year Registered Apprenticeship Program, which provides instruction, mentorship, and hands-on experience in safety, customer service, operational excellence, and career development. Successful completion earns a nationally recognized transit-operator credential.

Requirements

Valid CDL permit with Passenger and Airbrakes endorsements.
At least one year of DOT Medical Certification; the exam is provided upon hire.
High school diploma or GED.
Five years of consecutive licensed driving experience.
No more than two points on the driving license in the past three years.
At least 21 years of age.
Complete a background check, DOT drug screen, and DOT physical; a CDL permit is required before starting.
Applicants must pass the drug test, which includes testing for marijuana; applicants who test positive or refuse to test are not eligible for hire.

Responsibilities

Operate a TARTA bus along designated fixed routes, ensuring safe and timely transportation.
Provide exceptional customer service and assist passengers throughout their journey.
Adhere to schedules and ensure timely arrivals and departures.
Participate in the one-year Registered Apprenticeship Program.
