About The Position

Under direct supervision of the Fitness Manager, the Fitness Graduate Assistant assists with administrative and operational duties of the facility by working with full-time and student staff in all areas of the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC) facility. In addition, the position will assist in the continued development and daily operations of the program through supervision of fitness & wellness programs and the personal and professional development of students, faculty, and staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Must be a current and active CSULB student enrolled in a minimum of 6 units.
  • CPR/First Aid/AED certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
  • Currently holds minimum certification in one or more of the following entities: ACSM, NSCA, ACE, AFAA, NASM or reasonable substitute.
  • Strong student development knowledge.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in exercise science, health science, recreation, physical education, sports management, or related field is preferred.
  • Enrolled in and making satisfactory progress in the preferred areas of Kinesiology, Wellness Education, Recreation Administration, Higher Education Administration or other related fields or related graduate degree program at CSULB.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in the fitness and wellness field, campus recreation fitness/wellness position, or community fitness recreation programming preferred.
  • Experience in outdoor recreation leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of student and part-time staff.
  • Assist the Fitness Manager with various operations and projects, including but not limited to operational policy development and review, project proposal development, and program assessment.
  • Assist in the preparation of the fitness quarterly and annual reports, and maintenance of department manuals.
  • Assist in management of all related fitness operations, including but not limited to developing, implementing, supervising and instructing programs, seminars/workshops and special events for both participants and staff.
  • Assist with supervision of 10-20 student assistants and part-time employees.
  • Assist in the scheduling of student and part time staff for group exercise, instructional classes, and special events, approving trades/shifts as needed.
  • Lead the personal training program with scheduling shifts, creating and scheduling workshops, maintaining that each personal trainer certifications are up to date.
  • Assist with the planning, execution, and periodically direct monthly/semester meetings and trainings for student and part time employees, including the coordination of CPR, AED, and First-Aid training.
  • Maintain participation records, develop survey instruments to evaluate departmental progress, and assist in regular evaluation of the group exercise program.
  • Assist in development of promotional materials for recruiting, promoting, and involvement in all related programs.
  • Assist in the research, purchase, and inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Establish and maintain regular office hours.
  • Model, promote, and consistently enforce ASI Recreation and fitness policies.
  • Communicate with the SRWC Administration office through digital and personal interaction and collaboratively accommodates student clubs/organizations and off-campus affiliates to ensure their customer experience at the SRWC meets or exceeds expectations.
  • Represent ASI and the SRWC at campus meetings and events, developing a collaborative relationship with numerous university departments and student organizations.
  • Work cooperatively with other lead student staff to plan and implement large scale programs and/or training sessions as needed.
  • Teach a variety of group exercise classes as needed.
  • Serves on ASI, University, and NIRSA committees as direct and approved.
  • Other duties as assigned, reasonably within the scope of the job.
