Fishery Information Specialist (Office Specialist 2)
About The Position
The ODFW Marine Resources Program (MRP) is mandated to manage our state’s marine resources. Staffed with a dedicated team of biologists, samplers, researchers, and managers along the entire Oregon coast and on the Columbia River all are dedicated to providing for science based fisheries management. As a Fishery Information Specialist (Office Specialist 2) in Newport, Oregon, you will provide administrative, clerical, and technical support in the timely and accurate processing of fisheries data, including groundfish logbook, fish ticket, biological sample data, and other data sets. The person in this position uses knowledge of marine fishery program operations, knowledge of fisheries, judgment, and established criteria to help ensure Oregon’s fishery data systems maintain the highest standards of quality for use in fishery assessment, monitoring, and management. Oregon’s commercial ocean harvest and biological sampling data are processed in this position for storage on the Pacific Fisheries Information Network (PacFIN) servers.
Requirements
- Two years of general clerical experience that includes keyboarding, word processing, or other experience generating documents; OR An associate degree in any field; OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with MS Access (queries, relational database understanding).
- Experience with Excel (generating summaries, identifying trends, quality checks).
- Experience with data upload processes (PacFIN or similar database).
- Experience with QA/QC.
- Experience with identifying discrepancies across multiple data sources.
- Experience interpreting biological and fisheries data.
- Experience with state and federal commercial fisheries regulations.
- Experience recognizing potential reporting violations or compliance issues.
Responsibilities
- Provide administrative, clerical, and technical support in the timely and accurate processing of fisheries data, including groundfish logbook, fish ticket, biological sample data, and other data sets.
- Ensure Oregon’s fishery data systems maintain the highest standards of quality for use in fishery assessment, monitoring, and management.
- Process Oregon’s commercial ocean harvest and biological sampling data for storage on the Pacific Fisheries Information Network (PacFIN) servers.
- Maintain procedure manuals.
- Track and reconcile biological samples.
- Respond to data requests in a customer-service style.
- Explain data issues and corrections.
