About The Position

The Alaska Department of Fish & Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 4 located in Anchorage, Alaska. This position provides leadership and sound management advice for complex commercial fisheries, balancing economic opportunity for stakeholders with conservation of fishery resources through science-based stock assessment and sustainable management. The wage for this position increased by 2.5% effective July 1, 2026. This position is open to Alaska Residents only.

Requirements

• A minimum of 5 years of staff supervision experience.
• A minimum of 5 years of commercial fisheries management experience.
• Experience with Board of Fish process including staff comment development, presentations, and petition response.
• Experience with contentious fisheries management issues.
• Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
• A valid driver's license is required.
• First Aid/CPR certification.
• Peace Officer/Law Enforcement training.
• A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management; AND One year of advanced professional experience as a biologist or fish culturist.
• A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

• If selected, a manuscript or publication where you were the primary or co-author, a list of three (3) professional references with current contact information, resume/CV, and transcripts (if using to meet minimum qualifications) are required at the time of the interview.

Responsibilities

• Oversees commercial salmon and herring fisheries in Bristol Bay and Prince William Sound.
• Supervises five biologists and manages programs, budgets, staffing, and projects.
• Develops regulatory positions, issues emergency orders, and represents the department before the Board of Fisheries.
• Communicates with fishermen, industry, media, agencies, and the public on fisheries issues.
• Leads regional planning, habitat reviews, research priorities, and strategic fisheries management.
