About The Position

The Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) is seeking a detail-oriented and passionate Fiscal Specialist to join the Special Education team. This role supports the administration of IDEA Part B and C funding across Nebraska by working with schools, districts, and educational entities. Responsibilities include reviewing applications and reimbursement requests, monitoring budgets and compliance, and providing guidance on fiscal processes. The ideal candidate is organized, collaborative, and has prior experience with school finance, budgeting, grants, and compliance within a school district. This position offers a meaningful statewide impact.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and three years of experience related to the essential functions of the position.
  • Any equivalent education and/or work experience may be substituted in order to meet the minimum qualifications of the position.
  • Possesses a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to travel independently.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with budget management within a school district.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews IDEA consolidated applications and Maintenance of Effort (MOE) eligibility, and prepares allocations to ensure budget alignment and monitor status of funds.
  • Reviews nonpublic Proportionate Share to ensure completeness.
  • Approves service and individual provider financial submissions for rate approval.
  • Reviews reimbursement requests and funding applications to ensure alignment with grant and project budgets and allowable expenditures.
  • Updates Special Education payments for budget reporting.
  • Coordinates development and maintenance of the Special Education Maintenance of Effort (MOE) tracking tool for eligibility and compliance.
  • Supports training on fiscal processes and assists with the development and delivery of webinars and in-person presentations.
  • Maintains regular & reliable attendance, possesses a valid driver’s license and travels independently, and works in a variety of settings.
