About The Position

The First Mate is responsible for coordinating and delegating crew work assignments and for relieving the Master/Mate who is on watch. This role involves standing sea/mooring watches, piloting and navigating the vessel safely, and operating and maintaining vessel equipment. The First Mate also assists in docking barges and is responsible for carrying out the Master's Maintenance Plan. Additional duties include performing general maintenance, conducting crew safety meetings, preparing monthly equipment reports, and conducting vessel inspections.

Requirements

  • Possess a US Coast Guard License, Mate of Steam or Motor Vessels, 200 GRT or Greater Upon Oceans; with Mate of Towing Vessels Upon Oceans endorsement.
  • Current radar observer endorsement.
  • FCC marine radiotelephone operator permit.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to operate and utilize basic hand and hand-held power tools and deck equipment.
  • Familiarity with and ability to navigate/pilot in both harbor and interisland waters.
  • Good, proven judgment in operating tug and in handling equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to communicate with harbor pilots via VHF radio.
  • Sufficient verbal, reading and writing skills.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 2.5 years of total service, which includes 12 months with a Mate of Towing Vessel endorsement.

Nice To Haves

  • STCW 95 endorsement preferred.
  • Oceans License/Endorsement is preferred.
