About The Position

This role involves a wide range of duties related to vessel operations, data management, reporting, safety, and crew support. The 2nd Mate will be responsible for operating computer systems for requisitions and purchase orders, managing vessel data including crew lists and statistics, and preparing production reports for management and governmental agencies. Key responsibilities also include handling injury and illness reporting, managing medical emergencies and supplies, and fulfilling various National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) reporting requirements. The position also entails managing safety programs, operating various electronic equipment, and handling offload packing and crew needs. Additional duties may include assisting with navigation, safety inspections and training, chart corrections, and maintaining various logs and equipment as per FCC and state requirements.

Requirements

  • Coast Guard License Uninspected Fishing Industry Vessel license required: Near Coastal but Oceans is preferred – 1,600 to 5,000 GRT
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as 2nd Mate of Fishing Vessels participating in fisheries in Alaskan or Russian waters

  • Above average computer skills including competence in Windows based programs, AmosD Data Base, and some network understanding

  • Meet US Coast Guard licensing standards regarding physical condition, hearing and eyesight minimums
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment and random drug tests
  • Capable of boarding and exiting a vessel without physical assistance by climbing up and down a gangplank or using a Jacob’s ladder
  • Must climb or descend one or more set of steep stairs, or vertical ladders inside and outside the vessel in all weather conditions as extreme as 30 degrees below zero

Responsibilities

  • Operate Amos D computer data program for requisitioning, receiving, and managing purchase orders.
  • Input and manage crew lists, daily statistics, transfer manager, offload instructions/tracking, phone transactions, employee information, injury/illness reporting, and catch manager in the Vessel Data Center (VDC).
  • Prepare production reports for management companies and governmental agencies.
  • Manage injury/illness reports, witness statements, OSHA 200 Log, USCG 2692 Form, medical log, clinic authorizations, alcohol testing, and drug testing.
  • Handle medical emergencies and supplies management, including working with MHS, making clinic appointments, arranging crewmember emergency departures, and reporting all emergency situations.
  • Complete NMFS reporting, including EEZ Crossing, Cease/Begin Reports, Daily Logbook, Weekly Report, Product Transfer Report, submission of Yellow Sheets Quarterly, Observer Data, Catch Data to ASC Accounting, and records of home packs, donations, fish consumed onboard, and catch logs.
  • Arrange and manage Safety Bingo.
  • Operate computer and other electronic equipment including NT Server, Observer Computer, Purser Computer, Fax Machine, Black Box, JRC, Cell Phones, and Crewmember Communications Computer.
  • Manage Offload Pack documentation including manifests, mate’s receipts, HR paperwork, injury/illness reports, and fishmeal samples.
  • Address crew needs such as medical treatment, W-4 changes, address changes, cab vouchers, travel arrangements, work gear check-out, office supplies, extension sign-up, life raft organization, MSDS, diversity and/or incident statements, contracts, newspapers, and in-town purchases.
  • Complete USCG Arrival Reports and Docking Reports.
  • Trim fuel tanks.
  • Assist with navigation and watch.
  • Assist with safety inspections and safety training for crew.
  • Perform stability calculations.
  • Make corrections to navigational charts and publications.
  • Inspect firefighting equipment (fire extinguishers and fixed fire systems).
  • Inspect SCBA’s (self-contained breathing apparatus).
  • Test EPIRB’s monthly.
  • Inspect and inventory survival suits.
  • Inspect and inventory pyrotechnics (flares-smokes).
  • Inspect life-rings, smoke-buoys, and lights attached to life-rings.
  • Make logbook entries into the Official Bridge Log every 4 hours (weather, course, speed, activity, etc.).
  • Make logbook entries of safety inspections.
  • Maintain the garbage log according to MARPOL regulations.
  • Inspect and test GMDSS Console daily and maintain a logbook as assigned.
  • Maintain logbooks, manning requirements, and inspections per Washington state laws while operating in Washington state waters.
  • Maintain an up-to-date certificate file (expiration dates) for the Maritime Compliance Officer.
  • Prepare the Yearly EPA Report for Operations.
  • Prepare the Fishing in Alaska/Outside of Alaska Annual Report for Operations.
