About The Position

This role involves a wide range of duties focused on vessel operations, data management, safety, and compliance. The 2nd Mate will be responsible for operating computer systems for requisitions, inventory, and crew management, as well as handling all required reporting to management companies and governmental agencies. This includes detailed record-keeping for injuries, illnesses, and catch data. The position also requires managing medical emergencies, coordinating supplies, and ensuring all safety equipment is inspected and maintained. Additionally, the 2nd Mate will assist with navigation, chart corrections, and various other operational tasks as needed.

Requirements

  • Coast Guard License Uninspected Fishing Industry Vessel license required: Near Coastal but Oceans is preferred – 1,600 to 5,000 GRT
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as 2nd Mate of Fishing Vessels participating in fisheries in Alaskan or Russian waters
  • Excellent communication abilities, organizational abilities, and intense detail management abilities, including interpersonal skills necessary to foster cooperation
  • Above average computer skills to include competence in Windows based programs, AmosD Data Base, some network understanding
  • Self-motivated and able to work both supervised and independently as needed
  • Advanced First Aid training
  • Ability to assist and counsel vessel employees when appropriate
  • Meet US Coast Guard licensing standards regarding physical condition, hearing and eyesight minimums
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment and random drug tests
  • Capable of boarding and exiting a vessel without physical assistance by climbing up and down a gangplank or using a Jacob’s ladder
  • Ability to climb or descend one or more set of steep stairs, or vertical ladders inside and outside the vessel in all weather conditions as extreme as 30 degrees below zero

Responsibilities

  • Operate Amos D computer data program for requisitioning, receiving, and managing purchase orders.
  • Manage Vessel Data Center (VDC) input, including crew lists, daily statistics, transfer manager, offload instructions/tracking, phone transactions, employee information, and injury/illness reporting.
  • Prepare production reports for management companies and governmental agencies.
  • Manage injury/illness reports, witness statements, OSHA 200 Log, USCG 2692 Form, medical log, clinic authorizations, alcohol testing, and drug testing.
  • Handle medical emergencies and supplies management, including working with MHS, making clinic appointments, and arranging crewmember emergency departures.
  • Report all emergency situations, witness statements, and written statements.
  • Order and inventory medical supplies.
  • Complete NMFS reporting, including EEZ crossing, cease/begin reports, daily logbook, weekly reports, product transfer reports, submission of Yellow Sheets quarterly, observer data, and catch data to ASC Accounting.
  • Maintain records of home packs, donations, and fish consumed onboard.
  • Arrange and manage Safety Bingo.
  • Operate and manage various computer and electronic equipment including NT Server, Observer Computer, Purser Computer, Fax Machine, Black Box, JRC, Cell Phones, and Crewmember Communications Computer.
  • Prepare Offload Packs, including manifests, mate’s receipts, HR paperwork, injury/illness reports, and fishmeal samples.
  • Address crew needs such as medical treatment, W-4 changes, address changes, cab vouchers, travel arrangements, work gear check-out, office supplies, extension sign-up, life raft organization, MSDS, diversity and/or incident statements, contracts, and in-town purchases.
  • Complete USCG Arrival Reports and Docking Reports.
  • Trim fuel tanks.
  • Assist with navigation and watch duties.
  • Assist with safety inspections and safety training for crew.
  • Perform stability calculations.
  • Correct navigational charts and publications.
  • Inspect firefighting equipment (fire extinguishers and fixed fire systems).
  • Inspect SCBA’s (self-contained breathing apparatus).
  • Test EPIRB’s monthly.
  • Inspect and inventory survival suits.
  • Inspect and inventory pyrotechnics (flares-smokes).
  • Inspect life-rings, smoke-buoys, and lights attached to life-rings.
  • Make logbook entries into the Official Bridge Log every 4 hours (weather, course, speed, activity, etc.).
  • Make logbook entries of safety inspections.
  • Maintain garbage log according to MARPOL regulations.
  • Inspect and test GMDSS Console daily and maintain logbook.
  • Comply with Office of Marine Safety, WA State requirements while operating in Washington state waters, including maintaining logbooks, manning requirements, and inspections per Washington state laws.
  • Maintain an up-to-date certificate file (expiration dates) for the Maritime Compliance Officer.
  • Prepare the Yearly EPA Report for Operations.
  • Prepare the Annual Report for Operations for fishing in Alaska/Outside of Alaska.
