JOB OVERVIEW Prepare detailed procedures for radiation control to be applied by station staff. Provides advice, guidance, and related services to station staff regarding radiation control practices.

Requirements

  • Specialized Training/Experience in Radiation Protection (or equivalent)
  • Requires a working knowledge of the basic sciences and associated mathematics, including physics, chemistry, electricity, and other technical subjects, in order to support the Radiation Protection, work program and understand acceptable limits from interpretation of regulations and instructions.
  • Requires a knowledge of English in order to prepare reports and training material and to communicate effectively with others.
  • 6–8 years of experience in a nuclear facility production environment
  • Strong understanding of operations, planning, and maintenance trade functions, capabilities, and limitations
  • Proven knowledge of safe work practices and operational processes in nuclear settings
  • Experience with radiation protection, radioactive materials handling, and related equipment
  • Familiarity with radioactive waste management and regulatory shipping requirements
  • Understanding of radiation safety risks impacting both staff and the public
  • Ability to work within and support the interrelationships of a nuclear generating facility
  • Demonstrated administrative and supervisory experience
  • Experience managing external contractors and temporary staff recruitment
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and instructional practices

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and maintains/modifies detailed procedures required by line staff to implement sound radiation control practices in compliance with all regulations.
  • Defines operating and maintenance radiation safety requirements applicable to present, planned, or proposed work.
  • Develops detailed guidelines and procedures for work involving unusual radiation hazards or potential for such hazards.
  • Identifies potential sources/situations from which radiation control problems could arise and initiates actions to mitigate them.
  • For all proposed unusual operations/activities involving radiation hazards, evaluates the situation, specifies radiation control requirements, and provides adequate direction and support to the work to allow it to be done safely.
  • Recommends potential improvements to radiation control methods, equipment, or facilities, based on internal and external operating experience, to minimize or eliminate hazards.
  • Provides direction and guidance to nuclear facility staff, contract staff and visitors to assist in compliance with radiation control regulations.
  • Provides interpretation of procedures and guidance regarding compliance/implementation.
  • Provides assurance that radiation control procedures and related practices are implemented by line staff e.g., protective clothing, change rooms, protection control devices, equipment availability, integrity and repair, operational surveying/monitoring.
  • Performs inspection surveys as appropriate: nuclear facility air and water effluent radioactive waste and shipments. Specifically high, unusual, or unexpected hazards abnormal conditions.
  • Inspects radiation protection instrumentation to ensure conformance with applicable control regulations and initiates required corrective action.
  • Maintains nuclear facility radiation control records.
  • Investigates minor incidents and participates in investigations of major incidents to determine causes and factors involved.
  • Develops training material for use in the training of Safety Technicians
  • Prepares reports on the state of radiological conditions in the nuclear facility.
  • Performs responsibilities required by the AECB Radioisotope Licenses related to check sources. Selects, purchases, and controls such sources.
  • Determines the best assignment of work scope and type, taking into account workload and resource considerations.
  • Assigns work scope and type to be handled by each subordinate.
  • Ensures appropriate work authorization and protection is in place.
  • Monitors work execution, both through personal observation and management information, to ensure work quality, policy/procedure compliance, safety, timeliness, and productivity and taking action as appropriate.
  • Resolve work scope or procedural issues arising during work execution.
  • Validates time and cost reporting inputs.
  • Maintains stewardship of assigned tools, work equipment and facilities.
  • Monitors and prepares performance reports of key indicators.
  • Provides input to manager regarding future space/accommodation needs, workstation standards, work methods, work order planning and scheduling process.
  • Provides feedback to the manager regarding the ability to undertake and complete work, as part of the long- range scheduling and planning process.
