About The Position

Verkada is hiring a Firmware Release & Test Automation Engineer to own the final stage between embedded code development and physical deployment across its global fleet of connected devices. This hybrid engineering role spans build infrastructure, automated validation, and release governance. The engineer will architect continuous integration pipelines, design Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) and Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) automation fixtures, define release qualification criteria, and coordinate safe, staged over-the-air updates. The role works closely with firmware engineers, hardware validation teams, and cloud backend developers to ensure device builds are stable, secure, and reliable. The position is onsite five days per week at Verkada’s San Mateo, California headquarters and requires at least one week of annual travel to the engineering office in Krakow, Poland.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in software/firmware build infrastructure, embedded test automation, or release engineering.
  • Strong programming proficiency in Python and Bash for automation, scripting, and test framework development.
  • Working knowledge of C/C++ in embedded Linux or RTOS environments.
  • Hands-on experience building or maintaining CI/CD pipelines for embedded systems, such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, or TeamCity.
  • Experience with automated test execution on physical hardware targets, including HIL testbeds, serial/UART logging, JTAG/SWD, or network power switches.
  • Understanding of modern version control workflows, including Git branching models, tagging, and release trains, and build systems such as Yocto/BitBake, CMake, Make, or Bazel.
  • Willingness and ability to work onsite five days per week at the San Mateo headquarters.
  • Willingness to travel at least one week per year to the engineering office in Krakow, Poland.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of Go.
  • Experience with secure boot workflows, cryptographic firmware signing, and Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) generation.
  • Familiarity with over-the-air (OTA) update frameworks and dual-partition (A/B) fallback mechanisms.
  • Experience monitoring fleet health telemetry using DataDog, Grafana, Prometheus, or ELK.
  • Knowledge of embedded communication interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, and Ethernet, and Wi-Fi or cellular networking.

Responsibilities

  • Define, maintain, and optimize the end-to-end release pipeline for embedded Linux and RTOS builds across devices.
  • Design, build, and scale automated HIL and SIL test harnesses to detect regressions before firmware reaches external hardware.
  • Establish go/no-go qualification gates, track test flakiness, and lead triage of release-blocking bugs with firmware developers.
  • Drive staged fleet rollouts and canary deployments, monitor telemetry for field anomalies, and execute rollbacks when needed.
  • Build tools and CI/CD automation to accelerate firmware compilation, packaging, and local test cycles.
  • Take technical ownership of major validation systems and collaborate with and mentor peers across software, firmware, and hardware engineering.
  • Address complex edge-case issues spanning silicon, firmware, networking, and cloud services.

Benefits
