About The Position

The Test Automation Engineer will build automated tests to validate that migrated APIs behave like their original versions and that new APIs are production-ready. The migration target is for at least 98% of APIs to pass validation on the first attempt. The position is hybrid in the Washington, DC Metro Area, with work at IRS facilities and approved remote locations. U.S. citizenship is required, and the employee must be able to obtain and maintain an IRS Moderate Background Investigation (MBI)/Public Trust and meet IRS suitability and residency requirements.

Requirements

• 1 to 2 years of experience in software testing, QA automation, or API development.
• Experience testing REST APIs using a tool such as Postman, REST Assured, Karate, pytest, or SoapUI.
• Scripting or programming experience in Python, Java, or JavaScript.
• Basic understanding of HTTP, JSON, XML, and API authentication.
• Familiarity with Git and running tests in a CI pipeline.
• Bachelor's degree in a technical field or equivalent experience.
• U.S. citizenship.
• Ability to obtain and maintain an IRS Moderate Background Investigation (MBI); must meet IRS suitability and residency requirements.

Nice To Haves

• API gateway or migration testing experience.
• Basic performance testing experience with JMeter or k6.
• ISTQB or similar testing certification.
• Active IRS MBI or prior IRS work.

Responsibilities

• Write automated tests for REST and SOAP APIs, covering status codes, headers, payloads, and authentication.
• Build functional equivalency tests that submit identical requests to webMethods and Kong API versions and identify differences.
• Integrate tests into CI/CD pipelines so API changes and migration waves are validated before release.
• Test security behavior, including mTLS, OAuth2, JWT handling, ACLs, and rate limits.
• Run smoke tests after production changes and migration cutovers.
• Keep test data, test cases, and results organized and traceable to each API.
• Report defects clearly and verify fixes.
