Firmware Engineering Manager (EN.FMFM)

Nuvoton Technology•Austin, MO

About The Position

Lead firmware engineers and oversee the design, development, and maintenance of embedded firmware and software for Super I/O (SIO) and Embedded Controller (EC) chip products used in enterprise-class PC platforms, including desktops, workstations, notebooks, and all-in-one systems. The role combines technical leadership with hands-on engineering across multiple generations of SIO and EC products, covering firmware architecture, software design, boot flows, low-level drivers, system services, and firmware frameworks. The Firmware Engineering Manager serves as the primary technical authority for SIO and EC firmware. The role leads complex feature development, reviews designs and code, supports integration with system BIOS and platform firmware, and works with hardware and validation teams and global customers. It also includes security-focused firmware development, support for proof-of-concept work, troubleshooting of complex customer issues, and mentorship of firmware engineers.

Requirements

  • Experience developing firmware primarily in C.
  • Experience with bare-metal and RTOS-based environments.
  • Experience with embedded firmware and software for Super I/O (SIO) and Embedded Controller (EC) products.
  • Ability to work on firmware architecture and software design, including boot flow, low-level drivers, system services, and firmware frameworks.
  • Ability to develop or lead features involving thermal monitoring, fan control, power management, and hardware-software interactions.
  • Ability to perform design reviews, code reviews, and architectural assessments.
  • Experience supporting integration with system BIOS and platform firmware.
  • Ability to collaborate with hardware and validation teams and customers on requirements and technical constraints.
  • Ability to troubleshoot firmware- and silicon-related issues, analyze root causes, and deliver corrective actions.
  • Experience or capability in security-related firmware, including cryptographic mechanisms, secure boot flows, and device identity features.
  • Ability to debug complex firmware, hardware, and system-level issues using hardware and software debugging tools.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership and mentorship to firmware engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead firmware engineers and oversee firmware and software design, development, and maintenance for SIO and EC chip products.
  • Oversee and contribute hands-on to firmware architecture and software design across multiple generations of SIO and EC products, including boot flow, low-level drivers, system services, and firmware frameworks.
  • Lead the definition and implementation of complex features, including thermal monitoring, fan control, power management, and hardware-software interaction mechanisms.
  • Act as the primary technical authority for SIO and EC firmware, conducting design reviews, code reviews, and architectural assessments for correctness, performance, security, and maintainability.
  • Develop firmware primarily in C in bare-metal and RTOS-based environments, and support integration with system BIOS and platform firmware.
  • Collaborate with hardware teams, validation teams, and global customers to define requirements, assess technical constraints, and develop customer-specific firmware features and solutions.
  • Serve as a key interface with strategic customers to troubleshoot firmware- and silicon-related issues, identify root causes, and deliver corrective actions.
  • Design and implement security-related firmware functionality, including cryptographic mechanisms, secure boot flows, and device identity features for platform security and Root of Trust solutions.
  • Support proof-of-concept activities for new technologies and future product directions.
  • Debug complex firmware, hardware, and system-level issues using hardware and software debugging tools, and guide engineering teams in resolving critical customer escalations.
  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to firmware engineers to support consistent implementation practices and successful project execution.
