About The Position

The Microsoft Silicon Engineering Solutions and Cloud Hardware Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) team develops and delivers hardware and firmware that powers Microsoft’s Intelligent Cloud. Its Firmware Center of Excellence creates foundational firmware for Microsoft Cloud, supporting servers and racks across the global fleet. The team is developing next-generation hardware and firmware for server, silicon, and rack infrastructure, with a focus on firmware innovation and securing Azure infrastructure for Microsoft and its customers. The Principal Firmware Engineering Manager will lead engineers and help design and architect systems and servers intended to scale across the Azure fleet. The role covers all phases of product development, from microarchitecture design through firmware architecture, development, and diagnostics. It contributes to subsystem architecture, design, and development, including low-level hardware-interface firmware and ASIC boot-flow definition, and is responsible for firmware-level diagnostics and debugging as part of end-to-end firmware development.

Requirements

  • Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field and 7 or more years of technical engineering experience; or a master’s degree in one of these fields and 10 or more years of technical engineering experience; or a bachelor’s degree in one of these fields and 12 or more years of technical engineering experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with peripherals such as PCIe and memory interfaces, OS primitives, memory management, scheduling, interrupts, and threading.
  • Experience implementing hardware and firmware security primitives.
  • Experience with platform initialization, board support package integration, and low-level peripheral drivers such as PCIe, I2C, eMMC, SPI, USB, and UART, as well as memory management, scheduling, interrupts, and multithreading.
  • Experience architecting, designing, and delivering new data-center-class technologies across an entire platform.
  • Experience working with external partner teams to drive design and architectural changes.
  • Experience driving organizational changes related to product design and architecture.
  • 10 or more years of professional experience designing and developing embedded software solutions.
  • Experience working from early SoC architecture and design concepts through shipment of the final product.
  • Experience driving firmware architecture solutions, with detailed troubleshooting and debugging skills.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in all phases of product development, from microarchitecture design through firmware architecture, development, and diagnostics.
  • Help drive the architecture, design, and development of product subsystems.
  • Develop firmware for low-level hardware interfaces.
  • Define ASIC boot flows.
  • Lead firmware-level diagnostics and debugging as part of end-to-end firmware development and debug.
  • Lead a team of engineers developing and delivering firmware and hardware technology for the Azure fleet.

Benefits
