About The Position

The Firefighter position is responsible for responding to a variety of emergency calls including fire suppression, medical assistance, hazardous materials incidents, motor vehicle accidents, and other emergency situations. This role involves protecting life and property by suppressing fires, performing search and rescue, providing emergency medical care, and maintaining equipment and readiness for response. Additionally, Firefighters participate in fire prevention activities, community outreach, and maintain accurate documentation.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED required.
One (1) year of experience in firefighting, emergency medical response, or closely related field.
Valid South Carolina Class E Driver's License.
Firefighter II certification.
Emergency Medical Technician certification.

Responsibilities

Responds to emergency calls for fire suppression, medical assistance, hazardous materials incidents, motor vehicle accidents, natural disasters, explosions, bomb threats, downed power lines, and other emergency situations.
Provides protection of life and property by suppressing, controlling, and extinguishing fires.
Performs search, rescue, extrication of victims, and forcible entries.
Assists individuals from burning structures and establishes openings in buildings for entrance, ventilation, or salvage.
Ventilates smoke and gas from buildings and performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris.
Provides emergency medical care according to certification level, including basic first aid, patient assessment, CPR, and administering authorized medications.
Implements infectious control procedures and provides rehydration and first aid support during fireground activities.
Communicates with medical personnel at emergency treatment facilities and relays medical information.
Participates in fire prevention, pre-fire planning, and fire education activities, including conducting safety programs and community events.
Maintains a state of readiness by checking and maintaining equipment and supplies on fire vehicles and in the fire station.
Operates, utilizes, and maintains specialized firefighting equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies.
Performs general maintenance tasks to keep vehicles, buildings, apparatus, equipment, and tools in operable condition.
Maintains comprehensive knowledge of applicable regulations, policies, and procedures, and stays aware of new equipment and advances in the profession.
Participates in physical fitness training, training drills, and continuing education activities.
Processes various documentation related to department operations, including incident reports, activity logs, and patient care reports.
Communicates with supervisor, other City employees, the public, medical professionals, and outside agencies to coordinate work activities and exchange information.
