About The Position

To protect life and property from hazards of fire through fire suppression, administering medical aid, public education, inspections, and other fire prevention duties. Maintains fire equipment and apparatus and facilities. Under the direction of the Deputy Public Safety Director, Deputy Fire Chiefs, and Fire Captains.

Requirements

  • Must have a valid Minnesota Driver’s License.
  • Entry level firefighter position, no experience necessary.
  • Must successfully pass a background investigation, physical and psychological examination and a one-year probationary period.
  • Must be able to pass an annual physical examination.
  • Ability to obtain the following certifications upon hire: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazardous Material Operational Certification, Emergency Medical Responder (EMR).
  • Developing and maintaining a thorough working knowledge of all department and applicable City policies and procedures in order to help facilitate compliance with such policies and procedures by all personnel.
  • Demonstrating by personal example the service excellence and integrity expected from all staff.
  • Developing respectful and cooperative relationships with co-workers, including willing assistance to newer staff so job responsibilities can be performed with confidence as quickly as possible.
  • Conferring regularly with and keeping the immediate supervisor informed of all important matters pertaining to those functions and job responsibilities for which accountable.
  • Representing the City in a professional manner to the general public and other outside contacts / constituencies in a manner that helps maintain and enhance New Brighton's reputation as a well-managed City.
  • Demonstrating a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Nice To Haves

  • Maintains appropriate MFSCB, MBFTE, and EMSRB licensures and certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Performs firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performs other related tasks.
  • Responds to emergency incidents in a timely manner.
  • Participates in fire prevention and safety education activities.
  • Responsible for maintaining fire equipment and apparatus according to standards.
  • Regularly participates in firefighting, technical rescue, and emergency medical services training events sponsored by the department.
  • Performs other job-related responsibilities as apparent or assigned.
