About The Position

This position involves performing firefighting and paramedic duties. The role requires responding to emergency calls, administering medical treatment, and extinguishing fires. The Firefighter Paramedic Lateral works under the supervision of a Fire Station Lieutenant and an EMS Lieutenant, gathering medical information, providing treatment, and communicating with hospital personnel. Responsibilities also include driving emergency vehicles, searching for victims, using specialized equipment to access areas, carrying victims, connecting hoses, identifying hazardous materials, and maintaining firefighting equipment. The role demands continuous learning of firefighting procedures and maintaining equipment.

Requirements

  • State of Tennessee National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) certified Firefighter I, II or eligible for reciprocity in the State of Tennessee.
  • Two (2) years of experience as a full-time Firefighter/Paramedic or five (5) years with a volunteer Fire Service.
  • Candidate must be at least nineteen (19) years old by the starting date of the hiring class.
  • Candidate cannot exceed forty (40) years old by the date of employment.
  • Currently licensed by the State of Tennessee as a Paramedic or eligible for reciprocity.
  • Must obtain State of Tennessee Paramedic licensure prior to employment.
  • Must maintain Paramedic licensure as required by state guidelines.
  • Must pass a comprehensive medical examination.
  • Must pass a physical ability test.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class D Tennessee Driver's License with Endorsement F.

Responsibilities

  • Gather medical information from patients and bystanders.
  • Administer medical treatment based on patient condition and protocols.
  • Determine patient transport method based on medical situation.
  • Communicate patient condition to hospital medical personnel.
  • Load and unload patients from ambulances.
  • Drive emergency ambulances safely to transport patients.
  • Assist hospital personnel in emergency situations.
  • Respond to alarms and radio messages.
  • Search for victims in smoky areas and determine evacuation routes.
  • Use specialized equipment (e.g., jaws-of-life) to gain access.
  • Carry or drag victims to safety.
  • Connect hoses and advance them to fight fires.
  • Identify flammable or hazardous materials.
  • Lift and maneuver ladders.
  • Extinguish fires in low-visibility and high-heat environments.
  • Create openings in structures using tools.
  • Preserve evidence of arson.
  • Maintain knowledge of firefighting procedures.
  • Clean and inspect firefighting equipment.
  • Perform additional assigned functions.
