About The Position

This position involves working under the supervision of a fire station Lieutenant and an on-duty Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Lieutenant. The role requires responding to medical emergencies, assessing patient conditions, administering medical treatment, and transporting patients to medical facilities. Additionally, the position includes firefighting duties such as responding to fires, using specialized equipment, and maintaining a current knowledge of firefighting procedures. The paramedic must also maintain their paramedic license and ensure all equipment is clean and in good working order.

Requirements

  • Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • Must be at least 19 years old by the start of the Firefighter/Paramedic Class.
  • Must not exceed 45 years old by the date of employment.
  • Must be currently licensed by the State of Tennessee as a Paramedic or eligible for reciprocity.
  • Must obtain State of Tennessee Paramedic licensure prior to employment.
  • Must maintain Paramedic licensure as required by state guidelines.
  • Must be free of felony and/or misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude.
  • Must pass a required background investigation.
  • Must pass a comprehensive medical examination meeting NFPA-1582 standards.
  • Must pass a battery of tests, potentially including written fire selection tests, paramedic competency evaluation, and physical ability test.
  • Must progress through the State of Tennessee Fire Fighter Certification Program (NFPA Standards 1001) as a condition of continued employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class D Tennessee Driver's License with Endorsement F.

  • Knowledge of the Memphis geographical area is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Gather medical information by questioning patients or bystanders.
  • Check patient's pulse and respiration.
  • Administer medical treatment based on patient's condition and established protocols.
  • Determine the appropriate mode of patient transport (ambulance or wing).
  • Communicate patient status and treatment details to hospital medical personnel.
  • Load and unload patients into and out of ambulances.
  • Drive emergency ambulances safely to calls and transport patients.
  • Respond to alarms and radio messages.
  • Don protective equipment, including air packs and turnouts.
  • Search for victims in smoky areas and identify safe evacuation routes.
  • Use specialized equipment like the jaws-of-life to access vehicles, equipment, or structures.
  • Carry or drag victims down ladders or stairs.
  • Connect hoses and advance charged hose lines to fight fires.
  • Identify flammable or hazardous materials.
  • Lift and maneuver ladders.
  • Extinguish fires in low visibility and high heat conditions.
  • Create openings in structures using tools like axes or pike poles.
  • Preserve evidence of arson.
  • Maintain current knowledge of firefighting procedures.
  • Maintain paramedic license.
  • Clean and inspect equipment.
  • Perform additional assigned functions.
