About The Position

This position involves working under the supervision of a fire station Lieutenant and an on-duty Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Lieutenant. The role requires gathering medical information from patients and bystanders, assessing patient conditions by checking pulse and respiration, and administering appropriate medical treatment. Decisions regarding patient transport via ambulance or wing will be made based on the medical situation and established protocols. Communication with hospital medical personnel regarding patient status is essential. Responsibilities also include loading/unloading patients, safely driving emergency ambulances, and responding to alarms and radio messages. The role entails donning protective gear, searching for victims in hazardous environments, using specialized equipment like the jaws-of-life for extrication, and carrying victims to safety. Firefighting duties include connecting hoses, advancing charged hose lines, identifying hazardous materials, using ladders, extinguishing fires in low-visibility and high-heat conditions, and creating openings in structures. Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of firefighting procedures, retaining paramedic licensure, and performing equipment maintenance and inspection are also key aspects of the job.

Requirements

• Must be a citizen of the United States.
• High school graduate or equivalent required.
• Must be at least twenty-one (21) years old by the starting date of the Firefighter/Paramedic Class.
• Must not exceed forty-five (45) years old by the date of employment.
• Must be currently licensed by the State of Tennessee as a Paramedic or eligible for reciprocity.
• Must obtain State of Tennessee Paramedic licensure prior to employment.
• Must maintain Paramedic licensure as required by state guidelines.
• Must be record free of any felony and/or misdemeanor conviction involving moral turpitude.
• Must pass required background investigation.
• Must pass comprehensive medical examination meeting NFPA-1582 standards.
• Must pass a battery of tests including written fire selection tests, paramedic competency evaluation, and physical ability test.
• Must progress through the State of Tennessee Fire Fighter Certification Program (NFPA Standards 1001).
• Must possess and maintain a valid Class D Tennessee Driver's License with Endorsement F.

Responsibilities

• Perform additional assigned functions.
