About The Position

This is a temporary, full-time Student Intern position within the Fire Rescue Division of Polk County. The internship provides job training and development in fire rescue functions, focusing on customer service and administrative support. The intern will assist staff with clerical tasks, prepare documents, support personnel with uniform distribution and sizing, review statements, and interact with the public and other employees. Flexibility is required for scheduling and potentially supporting emergencies outside of regular business hours.

Requirements

  • Must be a student currently enrolled at an accredited technical/vocational school or college, two (2) year community college or an accredited college or university system.
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license at the time of employment.
  • Must be 18 years of age by start date.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Knowledge of business terms, punctuation, spelling, and arithmetic.
  • Knowledge of general office practices and procedures and record keeping methods.
  • Ability to work independently and adhere to prescribed routines and practices.
  • Ability to prepare or draft routine documents and compose business letters, memoranda, and related forms and program materials.
  • Ability to make mathematical computations and tabulations accurately and at a reasonable speed.
  • Ability to meet and deal courteously and work effectively with employees and the public.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance and support to the staff for the Polk County Fire Rescue Division.
  • Perform clerical, secretarial, and related office work using personal computers and general office equipment.
  • Assist, initiate, and complete assigned duties and gather information for supervisor's use.
  • Draft, prepare, proofread, type, process, and research forms, memoranda, letters, records, reports, and summaries.
  • Follow up on assignments to ensure timely results.
  • Assemble related material for meetings, conferences, and other work unit needs.
  • Assist in delivering uniforms to various stations.
  • Support personnel with uniform sizing and checking uniform manifest.
  • Assist in reviewing statements and ensuring purchase orders are submitted and extended correctly.
  • Interact with the public, other employees, or officials via telephone or in person providing information and responding to inquiries.
  • Handle routine mail duties.
  • Perform related duties as required.
