About The Position

Purpose of this position is to provide executive-level leadership and oversight of assigned Fire Rescue operations and programs, including emergency service delivery, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), training, logistics, communications, special operations, and other departmental initiatives as assigned. The position evaluates department operations and recommends improvements to support safe, effective, and efficient service delivery. This class works under the general direction of the Fire Chief or designee, exercising considerable independent judgment in planning, directing, evaluating, and improving assigned departmental operations, programs, and personnel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in fire science, business administration, public administration, or a related field.
  • At least two (2) years of fire service management experience at the Battalion Chief level or higher.
  • Current State of Florida Firefighter Certification.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Paramedic certification.
  • Must possess and maintain an American Heart Association (ACLS) card.
  • Must possess and maintain an American Heart Association BLS – CPR & AED card.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License or ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must maintain throughout employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in fire science, emergency management, business administration, public administration, organizational leadership, or a related field is preferred.
  • Additional executive fire service, emergency management, incident command, leadership, or specialty-team credentials are preferred when applicable to the assigned area of responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, supervises, and participates in activities related to emergency service delivery, training, logistics, and other assigned Fire Rescue functions.
  • Manages assigned daily activities involving communications, special operations, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and Fire Rescue operations; ensures adequate staffing and operational readiness.
  • Analyzes operational data and performance measures, including response times, call volumes, trends, and other benchmarks; prepares and supervises the preparation of records and reports.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of department operations and institutes or recommends changes to improve safety, efficiency, effectiveness, and service delivery.
  • Assumes command or control of Fire Rescue activities at fires, medical emergencies, disasters, and other emergency incidents when required.
  • Performs labor and employee relations activities, including coordination with union representatives, Human Resources/Employee Relations, and the City Attorney’s Office, as appropriate; participates in collective bargaining activities and implementation of agreements.
  • Participates in recruitment and personnel actions and makes recommendations regarding hiring, transfer, promotion, reassignment, discipline, and termination consistent with City policies and applicable agreements.
  • Reviews and supports the proper maintenance, readiness, and condition of Fire Rescue stations, apparatus, equipment, and assigned resources.
