About The Position

The Fire Protection System Engineer serves as a technical authority for assigned fire protection systems, coordinating configuration management activities, assessing system health and performance, and providing technical responsibility for plant system operability and maintenance. The role works with the Configuration Management program for assigned systems and prepares configuration-control and design-change packages. It evaluates proposed changes and modifications for their impact on facility safety authorization bases and conducts troubleshooting and improvement activities in coordination with related disciplines. The position requires applying fire protection engineering principles to fire risk analysis in nuclear and industrial facilities, systems, and processes. The engineer uses knowledge of NFPA codes and standards, DOE orders, and DOE-mandated fire protection codes and standards, and maintains current knowledge of building and fire protection codes and regulations to support compliance. The posting references DOE Order 420.1D, Facility Safety, Chapter V, Configuration Management Program. The role is based in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, within Y-12 Facility Engineering. A DOE Q clearance must be obtainable and maintained. The position may involve access to Material Access Areas and participation in the Human Reliability Program, including a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and potentially a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination. Candidates accepting an offer must pass a pre-placement physical, drug screening, and background investigation; employees may also be subject to random drug testing. U.S. citizenship is required for security clearance applicants.
