About The Position

Provide independent, timely, and professional fire protection engineering support, services, and consultation for planning, design, construction, and maintenance of facilities for the Navy, Marine Corps, and other Supported Commands. Work may include minor works and specific or special projects; military construction (MILCON); demolition; maintenance; space utilization; and facilities development. Participate in stakeholder conferences and collaborate with engineering and architectural disciplines to coordinate and integrate systems with project requirements. Projects may involve life safety, construction type, height and area requirements, separation distances, fire-rated construction, spray-applied fireproofing, firestopping, sprinkler and fire alarm systems, mass notification, clean-agent fire suppression, base-wide fire alarm reporting, water distribution, hydraulic analysis, fire modeling, and performance-based designs. Facilities may include multi-story office buildings, steam plants, hospitals, housing, manufacturing, and training structures. The role requires substantial practical knowledge of fire protection engineering, applicable codes and standards, related engineering disciplines, project planning and management, and relevant design and analysis software. A minimum of five years of professional engineering code-compliant facilities design experience, including new construction and renovation design, is required. An ABET-accredited bachelor's or master's degree in mechanical engineering or fire protection engineering is required, with additional PE requirements when the degree is in mechanical engineering.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional engineering code-compliant facilities design experience for new construction, including renovation design.
  • Completion of an ABET-accredited course of study in fire protection engineering, or a bachelor's or master's degree in mechanical engineering or fire protection engineering, supplemented by considerable hands-on facilities design experience.
  • If the degree is in mechanical engineering, PE registration in Fire Protection Engineering is required.
  • Substantial professional knowledge and practical application of fire protection engineering concepts, theories, principles, practices, and techniques for planning, designing, constructing, and maintaining shore-based engineering projects.
  • Knowledge of DoD and Navy guide specifications, criteria, and policy; industry codes and standards; and standard fire protection engineering design practices, including UFC, NFPA, IBC, IMC, IRC, FM Global Loss Prevention Data Sheets, and the Society of Fire Protection Engineers Handbook.
  • Knowledge of local, state, federal, and foreign-country laws, codes, and statutory requirements affecting fire protection engineering design throughout the NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic AOR.
  • Knowledge of related architectural and engineering fields and their effects on fire protection engineering design.
  • Ability to make oral presentations of proposed designs and study results.
  • Knowledge and experience with Autodesk software, Microsoft Office products, fire protection engineering design and analysis software, and applicable DoD computer systems and software.
  • Ability to produce written analysis results, consolidate others' findings, and evaluate recommendations and facts.
  • Knowledge of budgeting, planning, and project management techniques, including coordinating others' work and leading teams.
  • Knowledge of and full compliance with safety policy and guidance, and use of personal protective equipment.
