About The Position

The Fine Paper Machine (FPM) Shift Supervisor position is responsible for coordinating the safe and cost-effective operation of the Fine Paper area at the mill’s sustaining rate. This role ensures environmental compliance, coordinates between maintenance and operations for equipment repairs and outages, and manages the labor force in accordance with the union contract and Domtar Advanced Work System (DAWS). Domtar is a leading producer of pulp, paper, packaging, tissue, and wood products, with a focus on safety and sustainability. The company operates a network of facilities across Canada and the United States, delivering high-quality products globally. The Hawesville, Kentucky location is seeking a full-time permanent Fine Paper Machine Shift Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Ability to work as part of a team or independently.
  • Good communication skills at all levels of the organization, including listening, writing, and presenting.
  • Demonstrated commitment to work within and create a safe and healthy work environment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • If no degree, must have at least 5+ years of practical experience in a paper manufacturing facility.
  • If degree, must have at least 2+ years of experience in a paper manufacturing facility.
  • Able to climb steps & ladders, open valves, lift & carry equipment.
  • Able to wear respirators and gas masks.
  • Required to enter confined workspaces when needed.
  • Able to work in an environment with paper dust, heat, dirt, grease, chemicals, noise, and other industrial climates, both normal and abnormal/adverse weather conditions.
  • Able and willing to work a 12-hour rotating shift (currently "4 on & 4 off"), or as assigned related to relief positions.
  • Ability to function independently with minimal supervision.
  • Able to meet demands of a 24/7 operation.
  • Basic proficiencies in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to utilize Hourly Time (payroll) software and scheduling.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering in Paper, Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, or related discipline.
  • Experience working in a Process Safety Management environment within a leadership position.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively lead safety initiatives and champion Domtar Safety Principles.
  • Support the goals of the Fine Paper Mill department as a strong leader.
  • Maintain open communication with the team.
  • Actively engage the workforce to foster collaboration for continuous improvement and business results.
  • Represent Domtar with honesty and integrity in all matters, including safety policy and PPE compliance.
  • Assign, review, and plan work for crews and maintenance support.
  • Resolve union disagreements and grievances at the first level.
  • Set expectations, manage crew and individual performance, and implement plans for continuous improvement.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and develop improvement plans for hourly employees.
  • Utilize positive reinforcement and disciplinary action to manage performance.
  • Maintain a positive, proactive culture and healthy working relationships within the crew.
  • Develop and manage the training of the hourly team, including new employee orientation to the department.
  • Support crew training and priorities based on DAWS requirements and crew skill set needs.
