The Financial Advocate is responsible for calculating and providing patients with personalized estimates of their financial responsibility before services are rendered. This role involves clearly communicating patient liability, explaining financial concepts like deductibles and coinsurance, and detailing how non-covered or out-of-network services impact out-of-pocket costs. The Financial Advocate also requests upfront payments, establishes payment arrangements, and interviews uninsured patients to identify and assist with applications for available financial assistance programs. They initiate credit scoring to determine eligibility for programs like Medicaid and hospital-sponsored charity care, collaborating with social workers and external vendors to maximize funding. A strong understanding of insurance benefits, regulations, and internal policies is crucial, as is the ability to educate patients and physician offices on financial matters. The role requires performing duties in a HIPAA-compliant manner and serving consumers in various settings, including virtual, bedside, and clinic rooms.
