The Financial Advocate is responsible for calculating and providing patients with personalized estimates of their financial responsibility based on their insurance coverage prior to service. This role involves clearly and accurately communicating patient liability, explaining concepts such as deductibles, coinsurance, copayments, non-covered services, and out-of-network services. The Financial Advocate also requests upfront payment, establishes payment arrangements, interviews uninsured patients to assess financial needs, identifies assistance programs, and coordinates with patients to complete necessary paperwork. Additionally, this role initiates credit scoring to determine eligibility for various financial assistance programs, collaborates with social workers and external vendors for Medicaid applications, and educates patients and provider offices on applicable organizational policies. Staying current on regulations for government funding, internal charity care policies, and federal regulations like 501R is crucial. The Financial Advocate performs duties in a HIPAA-compliant manner and collaborates with peers to serve consumers in various settings.
