The Financial Advocate is responsible for calculating and providing patients with personalized estimates of their financial responsibility prior to service. This role involves clearly and accurately communicating patient liability, explaining financial concepts like deductibles and coinsurance, and detailing how non-covered and out-of-network services impact out-of-pocket costs. The Financial Advocate also requests upfront payments, establishes payment arrangements, interviews uninsured patients to assess financial needs, identifies and helps patients apply for assistance programs, and follows up to secure funding sources. They initiate credit scoring to determine eligibility for programs like Medicaid and charity care, working with social workers and external vendors to maximize funding. This role requires a strong understanding of insurance benefits, marketplace options, and payer sources, as well as educating offices and patients on relevant organizational policies. Collaboration with provider offices to align scheduling with funding needs and clarification of financial responsibility is key. The Financial Advocate must stay current on government funding regulations (Medicare, Medicaid), internal charity care policies, and federal regulations like 501R, while performing all duties in a HIPAA-compliant manner. They collaborate with peers to ensure smooth operational flow for uninsured or cost-concerned patients and serve consumers in various settings, including virtual, bedside, and office environments.
