About The Position

Performs complex professional level accounting duties, including general ledger reconciliation, preparation of financial reports, audit preparation and grant reporting. Performs complex financial analysis for various programs within the city; and performs a variety of professional accounting functions relative to assigned areas of responsibility. This is a temporary/intern position and is non-exempt.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in an accredited two-year or four-year college or university with a major in accounting, finance, business administration, public administration, or closely related field; or recent graduate of such program.
  • Background check must be satisfactory.
  • Pre-employment screenings must be passed.
  • No prior professional experience required.
  • Basic accounting principles, financial concepts, and bookkeeping practices.
  • Introductory knowledge of governmental accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting is preferred.
  • Office procedures, practices, and standard administrative operations.
  • Computer software applications including word processing and spreadsheets (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with staff and the public.
  • Ability to work with accuracy, attention to detail, and follow established procedures.
  • Ability to learn and apply accounting processes, policies, and financial systems.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of financial and personnel information.
  • Ability to organize and complete multiple tasks in a timely manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, employees, and the public.
  • Ability to provide courteous and professional customer service.
  • Ability to work independently on routine assignments and as part of a team.
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative, adaptability, and willingness to learn.
  • Skill in operating personal computers, printers, copiers, and calculators.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior coursework or exposure to accounting or finance principles preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains the required confidentiality of all work.
  • Assists with basic accounting functions including data entry, filing, and record maintenance.
  • Assists in reviewing financial documents for completeness and accuracy.
  • Provides support in accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, or utility billing functions as assigned.
  • Assists with preparation of reports, spreadsheets, and financial documentation.
  • Organizes and maintains financial records and files.
  • Provides general administrative support to Finance Department staff.
  • Interacts with City staff and the public in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Finance Director or designee.
