The Fiber Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, restoration, testing, and repair of fiber optic telecommunications infrastructure in both aerial and underground environments. This role supports network reliability by troubleshooting service interruptions, performing fiber splicing and testing, documenting work performed, and ensuring all installations meet customer and company quality standards. The ideal candidate has a strong technical expertise in fiber optic systems, excellent problem-solving skills, and a commitment to safety and quality.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in fiber optic installation, maintenance, or restoration preferred.
  • Experience working with both aerial and underground fiber optic infrastructure.
  • Proficiency in single fusion and ribbon fiber splicing techniques.
  • Experience splicing both high-count and low-count fiber optic cables.
  • Proficient in the use of OTDRs, optical power meters, and fiber inspection equipment.
  • Strong understanding of fiber optic network architecture, routing, and cable management.
  • Experience with Multi-Dwelling Unit (MDU) fiber installations, including pre-wire and post-wire applications.
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings, splice diagrams, and network documentation.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Fiber optic certification (CFOT, FOA, or equivalent).
  • Experience supporting Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH), Fiber-to-the-Business (FTTB), or Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP) networks.
  • Experience working with major telecommunications providers or utility fiber networks.
  • Knowledge of GIS mapping, fiber management systems, and electronic documentation platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, restore, and repair aerial and underground fiber optic cable plant.
  • Perform fiber optic splicing for both termination and midspan applications using single fusion and ribbon splicing techniques.
  • Splice both high-count and low-count fiber optic cables while maintaining industry quality standards.
  • Troubleshoot fiber optic networks to identify, isolate, and resolve service-disrupting issues, including escalated outages requiring temporary or permanent mainline restoration.
  • Utilize Optical Time-Domain Reflectometers (OTDR), optical power meters, and other fiber testing equipment to verify network integrity and troubleshoot fiber faults.
  • Analyze test results to identify signal loss, cable damage, or network impairments and implement corrective actions.
  • Perform root cause analysis on service interruptions and recommend or implement long-term corrective solutions to prevent recurring issues.
  • Manage fiber assignments, routing, labeling, and documentation for new installations, expansions, and network modifications.
  • Install, route, and maintain fiber infrastructure within Multi-Dwelling Units (MDUs), including both pre-wire and post-wire installations.
  • Document all work performed, including detailed repair notes, splice records, test results, and restoration activities.
  • Capture and submit clear photographs of damages, completed repairs, testing results, and restoration work for customer verification and project documentation.
  • Coordinate with dispatch, supervisors, project managers, and other field personnel to prioritize work and restore service efficiently.
  • Maintain company vehicles, tools, equipment, and inventory in a safe and organized manner.
  • Ensure all work complies with company policies, customer specifications, OSHA regulations, and applicable safety standards.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and respond to emergency outages as required.
