About The Position

Provide a full range of nurse practitioner services in accordance with privileges granted by the Commanding Officer. This includes supervising and providing general screening and medical care and examinations of patients for routine, acute and chronic conditions involving any and all organ systems, providing immunizations, and diagnosing, treating, and counseling patients as indicated. The role involves treating patients with common acute conditions, illnesses, or minor trauma within accepted protocols and Nurse Practice Acts, or in collaboration with a physician. The nurse practitioner will collaborate with physicians in the healthcare of patients with chronic illnesses, request consultations or referrals, order diagnostic tests, and prescribe and dispense medications as delineated by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. The position also focuses on promoting preventive and health maintenance care, coordinating patient care, ensuring compliance with standards of care, and providing care within ethical and legal boundaries. Responsibilities include assessing patients, completing orientation and competency verification, participating in the orientation of new personnel, serving on committees, and participating in customer service and medical readiness activities. Ensuring a safe work environment and maintaining regular attendance are also key aspects of the role.

Requirements

  • Successfully completed Master of Science in Nursing degree program with specialization as a family nurse practitioner accredited by a national nursing accrediting agency recognized by the US Department of Education.
  • Maintains a current national certification in specialty (i.e., certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center [ANCC] or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners [AANP]).
  • Must possess and maintain an active, current, valid and unrestricted RN license as well being licensed to the Advanced Practice level IAW the US jurisdiction (fifty States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or the U.S. Virgin Islands) requirements of their currently held RN license to practice independently within the defined scope of practice for their specialty.
  • Non-personal services contract personnel must be licensed in the jurisdiction in which the MTF is located.
  • Must have a minimum of 24 months in the last 36 months of documented current clinical independent experience and competency in an outpatient family medicine setting.
  • Must have the level of experience and documented current clinical competency to be awarded “Regular” privileges to work independently.
  • Must possess and maintains current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support from the American Red Cross.
  • Must obtain and maintain the site's required health screening and immunization requirements.
  • Must obtain and maintain any necessary security access and/or background checks.
  • Must obtain and maintain all required documents, certifications, licenses, etc. listed on the credentialling checklist, sent by Katmai’s Credentialing Specialist, for this position for initial hire.

  • Knowledge of computer operations and proficiency in the use of basic word processing, data entry and automated medical records.
  • Skill in setting up, operating and monitoring specialized medical equipment such as IV infusion pumps, cardiac monitoring devices, EKG units, oxygen analyzers, nebulizers, and other unit specific equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Promote preventive and health maintenance care, including annual physicals, positive health behaviors, and self-care skills through education and counseling.
  • Coordinate patient care through a continuum and facilitate the achievement of optimal outcomes in relation to care, quality and cost effectiveness.
  • Ensure compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the medical treatment facility.
  • Provide care within ethical and legal boundaries.
  • Assess patients.
  • Complete orientation and competency verification programs in accordance with (IAW) unit guidelines.
  • Participate in the orientation of newly assigned personnel, as appropriate.
  • Serve and participate in committees, functions and other meetings as directed.
  • Provide relevant and timely information to these groups and assist with decision-making and process improvement.
  • Participate in customer service initiatives, and medical readiness activities, designed to enhance health services.
  • Ensure a safe work environment, employee safe work habits and patient safety IAW regulatory agencies, infection control policies, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
