About The Position

Emerald Youth Foundation (EY) has been supporting Knoxville's youth and preparing them to be community leaders since 1991. EY engages over 3,000 children, teens, and young adults annually through faith, learning, and health programs. This role is crucial for supporting students in afterschool programs who take the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Assessment. Tutors will help address learning gaps and strengthen specific reading and math skills through individualized instruction, aiming to empower students and help them achieve their learning goals. Tutors will be placed at one of EY's JustLead program sites, which are implemented through a network of churches and faith-based organizations to foster holistic development in urban youth.

Requirements

  • Be able to make the full school year commitment.
  • Be able to tutor in-person.
  • Demonstrate a desire to support the academic growth of urban elementary and middle school age youth.
  • Be able to build positive and meaningful relationships with youth.
  • Coachability– receptive to feedback/coaching, willing to learn, embraces continuous improvement.
  • Be currently enrolled in post-secondary education or a college graduate.
  • Have a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Nice To Haves

  • Some teaching/tutoring experience.
  • Enrolled in a teacher-preparation program or a program related to education.
  • Experience with urban youth is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Work with students on reading and math goals, based on student needs and grade level.
  • Focus on reading for elementary level tutoring.
  • Focus on math for middle school level tutoring.
  • Provide one-to-one tutoring, prioritizing individual support.
  • In some cases, work with groups of 2 students.
