About The Position

Under the supervision of the Director of the Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS), a tutor supports HCC students in high-risk courses through weekly study sessions. CAPS is seeking three peer tutors, one in each of the following areas: Writing, Math, and Psychology (PSY-142 and PSY-200. Additionally preferred PSY-222). Orientation and training are provided. On-the-job assistance and resources are available regularly. Employment dates: August 24, 2026 through December 18, 2026.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as a HCC student in good standing or recent HCC alum, without a Bachelor's degree.
  • Have completed the specific course you want to support, earning at least a B+.
  • Good communication, active listening, patience, empathy, teamwork, conflict resolution, and collaboration.
  • Basic computer skills and Google apps (training will be provided), organization, time management, and planning.
  • At least one faculty recommendation, vouching for your proficiency in the course.
  • Ability to work well with a diverse student population.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Psychology (PSY-142 and PSY-200. Additionally preferred PSY-222)

Responsibilities

  • Understand the course content and be prepared to engage students in active learning to set the foundation for the tutoring and help to identify the student’s needs and tailor the session accordingly.
  • Help students interpret the course content by breaking down complex concepts into simpler terms that the student can understand to ensure the student clearly understands the course content before moving on to other tasks.
  • Model or teach study skills, time management, note-taking, and test-taking to teach the student how to learn effectively by modeling good study habits and providing tips on managing time, taking notes, and preparing for tests.
  • Work with students on a one-to-one or small-group basis to provide individualized attention, identify the student’s strengths and weaknesses, and provide feedback accordingly.
  • Understand a Student’s Learning Style and adapt the tutoring session accordingly. Some students may be visual learners, while others may be auditory learners. Identify the student’s learning style and provide instruction accordingly.
  • Help students become independent learners by teaching them how to learn independently, providing guidance on studying effectively, and encouraging them to take ownership of their learning.
  • Assist in record keeping by keeping track of the student’s progress, maintaining accurate records with detailed notes on the student’s performance, and providing regular updates to the instructor.
  • Become proficient in the software used for instruction to effectively guide the student as needed.
  • Help students integrate information technology within the given area by teaching them how to use technology to enhance their learning, identify appropriate technology tools and provide instruction on how to use them.
  • Assistive Technology Center to help students with disabilities, identify appropriate assistive technology tools and provide instruction on how to use them.
  • Be able to identify and use resources to support student learning and provide guidance on how to use them.
  • Attend scheduled meetings or workshops to stay up-to-date on best practices in tutoring and be able to share their experiences and learn from others.
  • Communicate with the instructor if needed to review tutorial services to ensure the tutoring session is aligned with the course objectives.
  • Provide feedback on the student’s progress and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Communicate with other resources for assistance, such as ESL staff, as well as Math and Writing Coordinators, to support students, identify appropriate resources and work collaboratively to provide the best possible support.
  • Explore online tutoring as a resource to support student learning, identify appropriate online tutoring resources and provide guidance on how to use them.
  • Other duties as assigned.
