About The Position

At Honeywell Aerospace, the Failure Analyst - Mechanical Design Engineer II investigates aerospace components to diagnose and understand failure causes. The role applies engineering principles and investigation methods to component performance and reliability challenges, determining direct causes and collaborating with engineering teams on root causes and corrective actions. It requires understanding how metallurgy and materials behave under operational conditions, interpreting product functionality and failure mechanisms, and following standardized Material Engineering Component Investigation (MatEng CI) processes. The position reports to the Engineering Manager and is based in Phoenix, Arizona, on a hybrid work schedule.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
  • At least 2 years of experience in aerospace engineering performing problem-solving investigations requiring laboratory analysis; a master’s degree may be considered in lieu of 2 years of experience.
  • Must be a U.S. Person, defined as a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or person with protected status in the U.S. under asylum or refugee status, or have the ability to obtain export authorization.

Nice To Haves

  • Extensive experience in component failure analysis, metallurgy, and materials engineering.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, a collaborative mindset, and a proactive approach.
  • Familiarity with standardized engineering investigation processes and best practices.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills to clearly explain findings and solutions.
  • Experience resolving production-process problems in aerospace metals products.
  • Experience with aerospace design requirements definition, including drawings and specifications, and strong knowledge of materials and processes used in aerospace.
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory techniques to expose fractures, metallography, and electron microscopy.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth investigations into the causes of component failures using engineering principles and methodologies in a team environment.
  • Establish the direct cause of failed components and collaborate with engineering teams to determine root causes and corrective actions.
  • Analyze material behavior under operational conditions using knowledge of metallurgy and part performance.
  • Use knowledge of material and process failure phenomena to determine the direct cause of component failures.
  • Apply detailed knowledge of product functionality to explain component failure mechanisms.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to solve problems and improve engineering processes.
  • Follow standardized Material Engineering Component Investigation (MatEng CI) processes and expectations to support consistent, accurate investigations.

Benefits

  • Employer-subsidized medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.
  • Short-term and long-term disability coverage.
  • 401(k) match.
  • Flexible spending accounts and health savings accounts.
  • Employee assistance program.
  • Educational assistance.
  • Parental leave.
