About The Position

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is seeking innovative educators to join its Nursing faculty in the area of Pediatric Nursing. CSM is a student-centered institution known for its innovation and responsiveness to the community, offering excellent benefits and a supportive faculty environment. The Nursing department has highly credentialed faculty who engage in scholarly projects and support student success through advising and multi-modal teaching. Faculty utilize adult learning theory, act as role models and facilitators, and teach a range of face-to-face, hybrid, and blended classes using synchronous and asynchronous modes. Faculty are expected to be knowledgeable of learning management systems and innovative technology-based instructional delivery approaches.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing required
  • Three to five years clinical practice in nursing.
  • Registered nurse (RN) in Maryland, or ability to obtain Maryland RN license
  • Ability to use word processing, basic internet applications, and basic database navigation
  • Ability to use an educational enterprise, learning management system such as MyLearning to support and facilitate instructional delivery
  • Ability to teach in face-to-face, web and hybrid formats

Nice To Haves

  • Two years full-time teaching experience or four years teaching as adjunct faculty member, preferably at the college level.

Responsibilities

  • Coordination, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities to promote student-centered learning.
  • Performing assigned duties during the day, evening, or weekend on the campus(es) or center to which the faculty member is assigned.
  • Instruction, holding office hours, serving on various committees, and participating in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations.
  • Teaching 30 credits per academic year.
  • Scheduling, publishing, and holding 5 office hours per week during the academic year, including fall and spring semesters.
  • Participating in professional development opportunities and performing professional service hours based on faculty placement in rank.
  • Primary areas of teaching responsibility include: Nursing theory, Lab, Simulation, and Clinical.
  • Coordinating various aspects of the College of Southern Maryland’s nursing courses, including mentoring, observing, and evaluating adjunct faculty, and fielding student feedback.
  • Acting as a liaison to various clinical facilities, coordination of clinical experiences, management of student background and health data, and contributions to student learning outcomes assessment processes.
  • Coordinating, planning, organizing, and instructing courses in the day, evening, or on weekends.
  • Keeping active at a high level of expertise in the subjects taught and stimulating enthusiasm for those subjects.
  • Ensuring that each program/class contains essential curricular components, has appropriate content and pedagogy, and maintains currency.
  • Recommending textbooks and other instructional materials including classroom and laboratory equipment.
  • Assisting in the college's library collection development by selecting, evaluating, and weeding library resources.
  • Teaching all classes according to an approved course syllabus and for the required duration.
  • Keeping students informed and updated concerning course content, requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance requirements.
  • Keeping students informed about their progress throughout the semester or term through the prompt grading of papers and other work.
  • Maintaining accurate and complete scholastic records, including attendance records.
  • Submitting academic reports and other documentation in a timely manner.
  • Filing an appropriate course syllabus for each course taught with the appropriate department chair.
  • Conducting class evaluations and completing other college evaluations in accordance with college policy.
  • Ensuring that assigned classes are held as scheduled.
  • Making suggestions to the Department Chair, Dean, Provost and Vice President for Division of Learning concerning the improvement of the curriculum.
  • Participating in program and curriculum review and development and student learning outcomes assessment initiatives.
  • Making use of available college online resources (home page, office hour posting, syllabi posting, grade book, E-mail, etc.).
  • Ensuring that each course section is web-enhanced.
  • Planning each unit or lesson, both as to content and method, to make each class meaningful.
  • Studying and utilizing students' learning styles in each class to facilitate the best teaching and learning situations.
  • Incorporating instructional technologies in instructional delivery as appropriate.
  • Maximizing the learning opportunities for each student.
  • Keeping informed of current trends and new approaches to instruction via professional development activities.
  • Demonstrating a genuine concern for each student through personal conferences and the full use of faculty office hours.
  • Posting and maintaining office hours for student consultations.
  • Striving for the qualities delineated in the criteria for faculty evaluation used by the college.
  • Submitting required reports in a timely fashion to the appropriate college personnel.
  • Attending all faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the President, Provost and Vice President for Learning, Dean, Associate Dean, or Department Chair.
  • Becoming thoroughly familiar with all college policies and procedures and complying with all college policies and procedures.
  • Becoming familiar with the Faculty Handbook.
  • Serving on and providing information to college committees as needed.
  • Being actively involved in the co-curricular activities of the college.
  • Conveying college-related information to students in a timely manner as requested by college officials.
