Performs as a Facility System Engineer (Engineer II) at the Principal Underground Laboratory for Subcritical Experimentation (PULSE), an underground nuclear facility at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). The role supports PULSE’s ability to execute national-level experiments that help ensure the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile remains safe, secure, and effective. Initially, the engineer supports design, construction, turnover, commissioning, and readiness activities for two new PULSE testbeds. The position then transitions into the PULSE Facility Engineering group, serving as the original Subject Matter Expert/Cognizant System Engineer for one or more systems developed as part of the new testbeds. Potential systems include cranes/load handling, chilled water/HVAC, refuge stations, fire protection, and electrical systems. The engineer maintains cognizance of assigned systems, supports operations and maintenance, verifies physical configuration, maintains configuration-management documents, and helps ensure systems remain operationally ready. The role also involves technical analysis and design, coordination with other disciplines and vendors, procurement specifications, and oversight of technicians and support personnel. The primary work location is the Nevada National Security Site, approximately 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas. The schedule is four 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday, subject to change. A pre-placement physical examination and drug screen are required. The successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance; this requires U.S. citizenship and includes federal background investigation requirements. A counterintelligence evaluation, potentially including a polygraph, may also be required.
