About The Position

Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled general maintenance and repair of City facilities including routine plumbing and electrical maintenance; and performs related work as assigned. This is the journey level class in the Facility Maintenance Worker series. Positions at this level perform more highly skilled maintenance duties than the entry level Facility Maintenance Worker I. Work is performed under general supervision. This classification is distinguished from the higher level Facility Maintenance Worker III by the absence of supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

High School diploma or GED equivalent; and/or vocational training, AND two (2) years of recent, full-time experience at the level of a Facility Maintenance Worker I working for the City of Compton or its equivalent; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License.
Knowledge of City organization, operations, policies and procedures.
Knowledge of methods, materials and equipment such as hand, power and technical tools utilized in building maintenance.
Knowledge of methods, equipment and materials used in various trades such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry and painting.
Knowledge of graffiti removal techniques.
Knowledge of requirements of maintaining buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
Knowledge of preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Knowledge of applicable regulations and procedures for the disposal of hazardous chemicals.
Knowledge of provisions of the California Vehicle Code applying to the operation of vehicles on the highway.
Skill in safely using, maintaining, and repairing specialized tools and equipment to complete assigned projects.
Skill in using hand and power tools required in building maintenance.
Skill in maintaining tools, equipment and vehicles in clean and proper working conditions.
Skill in installation of drywall and repair.
Skill in verbal, oral and written communications; maintaining routine records and reports.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
Skill in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.

Responsibilities

Performs semi-skilled painting, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, concrete, locksmith and the repair and maintenance of buildings and related facilities, furniture and equipment.
Assists with applying paint and other protective finishes to a variety of surfaces using brushes, rollers, spray guns and other related equipment.
Assists in repairing and installing floors and roofs involving the use of asphalt, tile and other composition materials.
Maintenance and repair on structures using wood, such as cabinets and counters.
Assists in concrete, brick, plaster and glazing work.
Assists in the rewiring or relamping of electrical systems.
Operates hand and power tools and shop equipment; maintains tools and equipment.
Moves office furniture and equipment or places in storage.
Changes filters on HVAC and related equipment.
Performs graffiti maintenance.
Assists in training employees, including the handling of hazardous materials.
May oversee the duties of Facility Maintenance Worker I.
Performs other duties as assigned or required.
