About The Position

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Facilities Trades Worker to support the repair, maintenance, and operation of City buildings, facilities, and equipment. In this role, you will perform work across multiple skilled trades, including mechanical, structural, and HVAC systems. You will assist skilled trades staff with a variety of repair, maintenance, and installation activities, which may include electrical, carpentry, plumbing, welding, mechanical, HVAC, and related work. You will use standard hand tools, power tools, and equipment associated with these trades while helping ensure City facilities and equipment remain safe, functional, and well maintained. Your assignments may vary depending on the needs of the work area, giving you the opportunity to develop and apply skills across multiple trades while working as part of a skilled facilities maintenance team. Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Minimum of 6 months related experience in construction or mechanical environment.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral or written instructions.
  • Ability to apply common sense carry out written or oral instructions.
  • Requires a valid appropriate driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • May be required to pass CJIS (Criminal Justice Information Systems) background check due to working in secured areas, depending on area of assignment.
  • Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to sit.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Performs unskilled manual work in the completion of carpentry projects.
  • Assist a skilled carpenter (worker).
  • Operates and maintains various types of hand and small power tools.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory control for tools.
  • Assist with event support, snow removal and other emergency tasks may include nights, weekends or holidays as needed.
  • Adheres to established safety procedures.
  • Must be able to climb/work on ladders/lifts to reach high ceilings or walls.
  • Required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties. Pulmonary test will be provided by the city.
  • May be required to take classes or training to enhance job performance.
