About The Position

The City of Galt is seeking applications for a Facilities Maintenance Worker I/II. This role involves performing a variety of technical maintenance, repair, installation, alteration, and construction activities for City buildings and facilities. The position utilizes various tools and equipment and may involve working with electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and masonry. The recruitment may close once a sufficient number of applications are received. The position is represented by IUOE, Local 39 and is non-exempt. The Facilities Maintenance Worker I is an entry-level position working under immediate supervision, while the Facilities Maintenance Worker II is a journey-level position working under general supervision and performing the full range of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work independently.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from high school and one (1) year of work experience performing a variety of maintenance and/or construction work including work in one or more of the following trades: carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, mechanical, and welding (for Facilities Maintenance Worker I).
  • Equivalent to graduation from high school and three (3) years of experience performing a variety of maintenance and/or construction work including work in one or more of the following trades: carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, mechanical, and welding; or two (2) years of experience equivalent to Facilities Maintenance Worker I (for Facilities Maintenance Worker II).
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.
  • Knowledge of basic principles, practices, methods, equipment, materials, and tools used in maintenance and repair of City buildings and facilities, including carpentry, plumbing, painting, masonry, welding, and mechanical and electrical work.
  • Knowledge of techniques of carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical repair, and recordkeeping practices.
  • Knowledge of safety equipment and practices related to the work, including the handling of hazardous chemicals.
  • Knowledge of Illness & Injury Prevention Program elements.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and basic software.
  • Knowledge of English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.
  • Knowledge of safe driving rules and practices.
  • Ability to perform semi-skilled and skilled construction, modification, maintenance, renovation, and repair work on City buildings and facilities.
  • Ability to safely and effectively use and operate hand tools and mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to perform routine equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.
  • Ability to follow department policies and procedures related to assigned duties.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to make accurate arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone or radio, and in writing.

  • Ability to perform skilled work in carpentry, plumbing, roofing, painting, mechanical, heating, ventilation, and electrical trades (for Facilities Maintenance Worker II).
  • Ability to identify and troubleshoot maintenance problems and determine materials and supplies required for repair (for Facilities Maintenance Worker II).
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, maps, and specifications (for Facilities Maintenance Worker II).
  • Must be available for shift work, standby assignments, and work emergency overtime as required.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled activities including painting, carpentry, electrical repair, plumbing, welding, and other maintenance work as directed.
  • Performs safety inspections of City buildings and facilities; oversees various other safety functions for City buildings.
  • Reads and interprets technical manuals, sketches, diagrams, and blueprints to facilitate installation, servicing, repair, and replacement services and activities.
  • Responds to customer complaints and inquiries regarding facilities and buildings.
  • Prepares procedures and maintenance manuals for City building mechanical; electrical; and heating, ventilation, and (HVAC) systems.
  • Assists with preparing scopes of work, soliciting cost proposals.
  • Assists in the preparation of RFPs (Requests for Proposal) for building maintenance and janitorial services and supplies.
  • Maintains public facilities, shop areas, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the workday.
  • Responds to emergency situations in off-duty hours as required.
  • Maintains records of daily work performed and resources used.
  • Operates a standard vehicle to travel to multiple locations in order to perform assigned tasks; transporting equipment as needed, and performing assigned tasks at each worksite.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

  • Bilingual Pay - $100 per month.
  • Medical-in-lieu - Employees who waive the City's medical coverage shall receive $200 per month for employee only, $350 per month for employee plus one, and $500 per month for family.
  • Incentives - up to 2.5% - 10%
  • On Call Pay - Two hours per day and four hours per holiday.
  • Standby Pay - Two hours for each standby shift of 8 hours or less.
