About The Position

Performs the maintenance, repair, remodeling, and general construction of City buildings, facilities, and components. This position works both indoors and outdoors, involving heavy physical work including working on scaffolding and ladders, frequent lifting and carrying of supplies up to ninety-five pounds, and requires visual acuity to distinguish colors. The role involves competing demands, multiple tasks, deadlines, occasional work beyond normal business hours, and responding to customer issues. Regular attendance is essential, and the position is subject to drug testing. This recruitment is for a full-time, contract, non-exempt position within the Utilities Department but may be used to fill other vacancies in other departments.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED
  • One (1) year of experience in the construction and maintenance of structures and building fixtures is required.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • An acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policies.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, techniques, activities, rules, and regulations related to the operations and functions of the position and services provided.
  • Knowledge of current principles of record keeping and records management.
  • Knowledge of customer service, and problem resolution techniques.
  • Knowledge of occupational and environmental safety and health hazards, and safety practices.
  • Knowledge of safe and effective use and maintenance of related tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of current methods and standards for preparing effective business correspondence.
  • Knowledge of correct English usage, grammar, composition, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  • Knowledge of business and personal computers and related software applications.
  • Knowledge of City organization, operations, policies, and procedures to effectively perform the required functions and duties of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Loads, transports, and unloads building supplies and equipment at various City locations.
  • Performs setup for various functions and moves furniture.
  • Repairs and installs counters, cabinets, desks, bookcases, partitions, floors, doors, building framework, and trim.
  • Installs, repairs, and finishes floor, ceiling tiles, and wall coverings.
  • Installs carpeting, repairs and replaces windows, and fixes doors and locks.
  • Paints, varnishes, and plasters walls and other surfaces.
  • Lays block and brick, builds walls and partitions, pours cement, and performs other building services.
  • Performs roof repairs, replaces paper, lays tar, and places shingles.
  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Repairs and repaints areas identified for graffiti removal.
  • Performs custodial services and maintains records of cleaning supplies.
