About The Position

Come join the Kansas Humane Society pack! We are looking for a Facilities Assistant who loves being an important part of an animal's life. KHS is a qualified employer for the Public Loan Service Forgiveness program. This position assists the Facilities Maintenance Manager in performing custodial, corrective, preventative, and emergency maintenance and repair of KHS building, system controls, outdoor areas, equipment and vehicles. Provides and models timely and courteous internal and external customer service. This position requires obtaining a forklift operating license and being able to operate a forklift.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and insurability under the Kansas Humane Society’s vehicle policy.
  • Proven history of safe driving free of moving violations and accidents.
  • Ability to study and pass a forklift operations license and safely operate a forklift.
  • Employee must possess the necessary physical stamina to perform all required tasks.
  • Basic cleaning knowledge but requires no previous janitorial experience.
  • Must be able to take direction, to work with minimal supervision, and to function cooperatively as part of a team.
  • Ability to use cleaning tools.
  • Requires attention to detail, a pride in work and building, organization, and high levels of energy and endurance.
  • Flexibility, friendly and effective communication, independent decision making.
  • Ability to perform and complete physically demanding work.
  • Respect for the human/animal bond and mission of KHS.

  • The employee is regularly required to use hands to type or loosen/tighten objects.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Repetitive motion above and below shoulder height (4-8 hours daily)
  • Repetitive hand scrubbing both at and above shoulder level (daily)
  • Must be able to use both hands for repetitive actions; firm grasp and fine manipulation
  • Hands exposed to water and cleaning chemicals on a repetitive basis (daily)
  • Deck brushing movement (daily)
  • May be pulled/jolted/jumped on by small and large animals 5lbs to 100lbs

  • Ability to deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization.

Nice To Haves

  • HVAC and/or electrician certification skills preferred
  • Advanced skills, such as HVAC and electrician certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily upkeep of human and storage spaces, incinerator, routine seasonal maintenance including window cleaning and snow/ice removal, stocking of needed sanitary and protective items throughout the shelter, and general upkeep of grounds and public areas.
  • Assist Facilities Maintenance Manager with maintaining animal food and supply deliveries and storage, ordering and stocking cleaning supplies.
  • Participate in set up and take down of tables and seating for special events as requested.
  • May be asked to provide support for animal care or other areas of the shelter, as needed.
  • Assist the Facilities Maintenance Manager in all building and grounds areas including, but not limited to: Monitoring and correcting defects, such as clogged or leaking restroom fixtures, dead batteries in dispensers and other equipment, etc.
  • Changing HVAC filters once a month and preventative maintenance if HVAC certified
  • Replacing light bulbs and ballasts in overhead lights
  • Assisting in preventative maintenance and repairs on pumps
  • Assisting in repairing dog lofts and suites
  • Cleaning and maintaining the incinerators
  • Assisting with completing work orders in a timely manner and being a resource for staff when the Maintenance Manager is not onsite
  • Emptying outdoor dog waste cans and suppling with bags
  • Spraying weeds
  • Painting as needed
  • Implement preventative maintenance schedules for building, parking lots, fences, outdoor areas, equipment, and vehicles.
  • HVAC and electrical system, if certified.
  • Maintain schedules of both preventative and corrective maintenance tasks to ensure action is taken at the appropriate time.
  • Assure that outsourced tasks are scheduled and completed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Work with exterminator to maintain a pest-free facility.
  • Maintain current Maintenance Manual defining specifics of all aspects of the operations of the maintenance department, facility, system controls, and equipment.
  • Maintains a neat and orderly work area, including janitorial closets, storage areas, maintenance areas and vehicles.
  • Performs all assignments in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Maintains equipment in good working condition.
  • Maintains appropriate supply levels in assigned areas.
  • Works safely at all times and promptly informs management about unsafe conditions existing in the work area.
  • Wears personal protective equipment appropriate for the task being performed.
  • Meets all quality expectations in assigned tasks
  • Adheres to proper security procedures.
  • Notifies management about problems or opportunities that affect service to the building.
  • Assist Facilities Maintenance Manager in taking immediate action to respond to maintenance issues that threaten the health or safety of animals, staff, volunteers, and visitors, as well as the building itself.
  • Help ensure the generator is operational at all times in the event of a loss of power.
  • Provide and model timely, polite, and respectful internal and external customer service, regardless of the circumstances.
  • Must remain calm, flexible, and willing to see other perspectives.
  • Represent KHS in a professional, courteous manner with staff, volunteers, customers and service providers that positively demonstrates the KHS culture.
  • Analyze complex, ambiguous problems, identifying potential causes and workable solutions.
  • Remain open to new ideas and consider all workable solutions.
  • Consider all available information, including future needs.
  • Communicate clearly and timely all issues needing attention, resources or planning.
