About The Position

The Fabrication Lab Coordinator provides programmatic and operational support for the MIX Center Fabrication Lab (FabLab). Reporting to the Assistant Director for Center Engagement, this position coordinates daily lab operations, instructional support, and public programming in a cross-disciplinary makerspace environment. The FabLab is a 2,400-square-foot shared learning space in the Media and Immersive eXperience (MIX) Center, and supports experimentation with digital fabrication technologies across film, immersive media, visual effects, design, and the arts. The Coordinator supports students, faculty, community members, and visiting artists by facilitating access to tools, training, and project guidance from ideation through implementation. This position operates with moderate autonomy, applies established practices and procedures, and collaborates closely with internal partners to support learning, engagement, and program delivery.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and professionally with individuals from diverse disciplines, backgrounds, and communication styles.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and manage competing priorities.
  • Teaching-oriented mindset: ability to guide and empower users to learn fabrication processes rather than completing work for them.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supervising student employees.
  • Experience developing workshops or educational programming.
  • Familiarity with interdisciplinary creative practices (arts, design, media, or technology).
  • Experience in using 3d modeling software like fusion 360, Blender, Solid works or equivalent.
  • Experience in using 2d drawing tools including Adobe creative cloud.
  • Experience bringing ideas and concepts to life combining various fabrication and model making practices both digital and traditional.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate daily Fabrication Lab operations, including scheduling, space readiness, safety, cleanliness, and overall functionality of the lab environment.
  • Supervise and support student employees, including hiring, training, scheduling, and ensuring staff are available to provide instructional guidance on fabrication processes, materials, file preparation, and project workflows.
  • Maintain equipment, materials, and documentation, including inventory management, purchasing and reordering supplies, basic equipment troubleshooting, and upkeep of lab handbooks, training guides, and required user forms.
  • Perform administrative and tracking functions, including monitoring lab usage through reservation systems and logs, tracking supplies and equipment use, invoicing, reporting, and related operational records.
  • Develop, maintain, and deliver FabLab orientation, training modules, demonstrations, and instructional resources.
  • Provide project consultation and mentoring to ASU students during ideation, planning, and execution, helping identify appropriate tools, materials, and fabrication pathway.
  • Provide mentoring in project planning and execution, supporting student creators from concept to completion.
  • Collaborate with the Production Shop Coordinator to support cross-shop project development and recommend appropriate resources for student projects.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director and Manager of Center Engagement to develop scalable workshops and short-form engagement activities for all age groups.
  • Lead public learning workshops and/or annual summer camps focused on skill-building for local youth.
  • Design learning modules that build progressively and support repeat engagement.
  • Support Community Artists in Residence by assisting with selection process, project development, implementation, and artist-led public workshops.
  • Support daily operations and events throughout the MIX Center as needed.
