The Exercise Physiologist will interpret physiological data from stress tests to determine individualized exercise prescriptions. They will plan and implement treatment programs based on patient evaluation, and modify exercise prescriptions based on cardiac symptomatology, signs and symptoms of exercise intolerance, or musculoskeletal, orthopedic, and/or accessory medical problems. This role involves working with physicians to determine program eligibility, progress, and timing of progression to unmonitored home programs or Phase III participation. The position also includes establishing and presenting a coordinated health education program for patients on exercise and risk factor reduction, participating in family and patient conferences, and working closely with cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, physician assistants, and medical staff regarding patient physical status and rehabilitation programs. Additionally, the role promotes referral to the rehabilitation program by developing relationships with referral sources, places electrodes on patients for various cardiac monitors and tests, counsels patients on home activity and exercise programs, and assists in the resolution of cardiac emergencies or symptoms of exercise intolerance. The Exercise Physiologist will assist in program planning and implementation, may serve as a mentor for staff working towards certification, and acts as a hospital consultant in exercise physiology. They will participate in appropriate professional organizations for personal development and assist in monitoring outpatient cardiac rehabilitation exercise groups. The role also involves various patient positioning and transporting duties requiring lifting and pushing/pulling with proper technique. The incumbent must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, including understanding the principles of growth and development over the life span and assessing data reflective of patient status to meet age-specific needs.
