Based in San Antonio, Texas, the Executive Vice President of Emergency Response & Preparedness is a senior operational leader at a fully funded, mission-driven nonprofit emergency management organization. The role runs the operational efforts of the response enterprise, serves as second-in-command to the President, leads the organization in the President’s absence, and is part of succession planning for the top job. It is a high-profile, high-tempo role intended for a mid-career leader and is explicitly not a 40-hour position for someone winding down a career. When disasters strike, the organization deploys medical teams, shelters, mobile command, and a reservist force of roughly 1,000 professionals, with the ability to scale beyond that for major events. The EVP leads emergency response and preparedness operations, oversees readiness and resource management, and represents the organization to customers, government agencies, healthcare and nonprofit partners, and community leaders. Within 90 days, the EVP is expected to own day-to-day operational decisions so the President is no longer pulled into tactical matters. Within a year, operations should run competently and predictably, freeing the President to focus on growth and external relationships. The reservist force is expected to become better known, more qualified, and faster to deploy, with mission assignments based on verified capability. The role is also expected to earn the trust of the board, partners, and customers as a credible successor to the President.
