About The Position

The Executive Director, Innovation Operations is a senior operational leader responsible for translating Innovation’s strategic priorities into coordinated execution and building the management infrastructure needed to support a growing, increasingly complex innovation portfolio. The role provides day-to-day leadership across Innovation Operations, establishes operating cadence and accountability, develops team capabilities, oversees portfolio execution, and advances priorities across organizational boundaries. As Innovation expands capabilities in areas such as clinical trials, strategic partnerships, commercialization, and other enterprise initiatives, the Executive Director helps establish repeatable operating models and modern ways of working that support growth without unnecessary administrative burden. The role ensures day-to-day execution, team development, and portfolio management are handled at the appropriate leadership level, enabling the Vice President to focus on enterprise relationships, operating model design, strategic priorities, modernization, and complex initiatives requiring executive-level leadership.

  • Lead day-to-day operations of the Innovation Operations function and establish weekly, monthly, and quarterly operating cadences.
  • Maintain visibility across the Innovation portfolio, including priorities, dependencies, risks, decisions, and resource requirements.
  • Translate leadership decisions into accountable execution and measurable outcomes; identify and resolve execution barriers and escalate issues requiring executive intervention.
  • Establish scalable processes and management systems that support growth and complexity while balancing operational rigor with the speed and flexibility of an innovation environment.

  • Build a culture of proactive problem solving, collaboration, continuous improvement, and accountability.
  • Oversee execution across a diverse portfolio of Innovation initiatives and lead selected complex or high-priority initiatives requiring senior-level coordination.
  • Establish appropriate governance, decision rights, milestones, and performance measures; coordinate interdependencies across projects, programs, and enterprise functions.
  • Identify portfolio-level risks and capacity constraints, develop mitigation strategies, and ensure initiatives transition effectively from concept and strategy into operational execution.
  • Establish mechanisms for measuring outcomes rather than activity alone.
  • Partner with the Vice President to design and implement scalable operating models across Innovation and support the maturation of capabilities, including clinical trials and emerging operating lanes.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify, standardize, automate, or redesign processes; lead modern ways of working that improve transparency, accountability, collaboration, and speed.
  • Develop repeatable frameworks and metrics to scale effective operating approaches and evaluate operating effectiveness.
  • Build relationships across clinical, research, Finance, Legal, Compliance, Procurement, Marketing, Communications, Technology, and other enterprise functions; coordinate cross-functional execution and address organizational barriers.
  • Clarify responsibilities, decision rights, and dependencies across organizational boundaries; represent Innovation Operations in enterprise initiatives and forums as appropriate.
  • Provide leadership oversight for financial and business operations, contracting and transaction processes, invoicing and financial workflows, audit readiness, operational controls, portfolio management, performance reporting, resource planning, and process improvement.
  • Establish appropriate controls, documentation standards, and governance mechanisms while maintaining an operating environment capable of moving at appropriate speed; reduce unnecessary administrative burden.
  • Provide concise, decision-oriented visibility into portfolio performance, organizational risks, resource requirements, and emerging issues.
  • Structure complex problems, develop actionable recommendations, translate operational information into implications and decisions, and support executive operating reviews and strategic discussions.
  • Ensure issues elevated to senior leadership include appropriate analysis and recommended actions.
