About The Position

The Kentucky Department of Education is a service agency of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and part of the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet. The department provides resources and guidance to Kentucky’s public schools and districts as they implement the state’s P-12 education requirements. The department also serves as the state liaison for federal education requirements and funding opportunities. The department is led by an appointed commissioner of education, who is hired by and answers to the 11-member Kentucky Board of Education. Offices are administered by associate commissioners, and divisions within those offices are administered by division directors. The department employs approximately 425 Frankfort-based workers; 175 employees in support of the Kentucky School for the Blind (Jefferson County) and Kentucky School for the Deaf (Boyle County); and about 518 employees at the 50 Area Technology Centers across the state. Responsibilities

  • Serve as Secretary to the Associate Commissioner and oversee the administration of the office functions in the Office of Special Education and Early Learning.
  • Draft correspondence reports and summaries of information for the associate commissioner and behalf of the office.
  • Maintain office files.
  • Provide recommendations on approved vendors following policies & procedures.
  • Interpret Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) policy to the public and departmental employees.
  • Schedule appointments & meetings for the associate commissioner.
  • Assist the office in preparing travel requests.
  • Maintain monthly Procard documentation.
  • Maintain spreadsheets on office expenditures.
  • Assist in maintaining all fiscal records for the office.
  • Open, sort and distribute incoming correspondence.
  • Maintain and file correspondence, legal documents, reports, and other records.
  • Receive, log, evaluate and distribute mail to appropriate individuals.
  • Answer incoming calls on behalf of the office.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
