Excavator Operator | Merkel Quarry
About The Position
Under the supervision of the Quarry Supervisor, the Excavator Operator is responsible for safe operation of the Excavator to support daily mining operations. This role focuses on excavation, material handling, face management, and loading support while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, production efficiency, and equipment care. All newly hired employees are required to attend New Hire Orientation and Safety Training in person at our Corporate Office located in Dallas, Texas. Attendance is mandatory and is a condition of employment. To support employees traveling to attend training, mileage and approved travel expenses will be reimbursed for individuals whose commute to the Dallas Corporate Office exceeds 50 miles, in accordance with company travel and reimbursement policies. Additional details regarding travel arrangements and reimbursement procedures will be provided prior to the training date.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required
- 1+ years of experience operating excavators in a mining, quarry, or heavy construction environment
- Basic mechanical knowledge and ability to identify equipment issues
- Ability to read and understand safety procedures and operational instructions
- Must be able to work 12 hour shifts, possible weekends, overtime, and holidays as needed.
- Must be able to read equipment operating manual
- Must be able to complete pre-shift inspection report
- Must be able to communicate over CB radio or with hand signals and warning sounds, with coworkers regarding movement of vehicles and mobile equipment
- Possess basic mathematical aptitude to complete daily reports
- Must be able to wear all required safety equipment
- Must be able to perform duties in a safe manner
- Must be able to read and interpret gauges
- Must be service oriented with proven ability to work in a TEAM environment
Responsibilities
- Operate excavators to remove overburden, extract raw materials, clearing waterways and maintain working faces.
- Load haul trucks, feed crushers, and move materials efficiently throughout the quarry
- Perform pre-operational inspections and routine maintenance on equipment
- Monitor excavation areas to ensure proper benching, slope stability, and safe digging practices
- Follow production plans and communicate with supervisors and haul truck operators to optimize material flow
- Maintain housekeeping in work areas and keep equipment clean and operational
- Identify and report mechanical issues or unsafe conditions promptly
- Assist with plant, pit, or site cleanup and other production tasks as needed
- Support other equipment operations when required (e.g., loaders, dozers)
- Adhere to all safety policies, environmental regulations, and MSHA guidelines
